Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers is the American slasher 1988 and the fourth edition of the Halloween movie series . Directed by Dwight H. Little and written by Alan B. McElroy, focuses on Michael Myers returning home to kill his nephew Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris), daughter of Laurie Strode, with former psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) is once again chasing him.

As the title suggests, this movie marks the return of Michael Myers after missing the previous installment, Season of the Witch . Initially, John Carpenter and co-producer Debra Hill retired the storyline of Michael Myers after the second installment of the series, intending to showcase the new Halloween-related plot of each sequel, where Halloween III will be first. Halloween 4 was originally intended to be a ghost story; However, due to the disappointing financial performance of the third film, Halloween 4 reintroduced Michael Myers.

Plot

On October 30, 1988, Michael Myers, who has been in a coma for the last ten years since the explosion at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, was transferred to Smith's Grove Sanitarium by ambulance. On the way, Michael wakes up after hearing that his sister Laurie Strode, who died in a car accident, has a daughter, Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris). He killed the ambulance personnel, and went to Haddonfield to find his nephew. Dr. Samuel Loomis chases after knowing that Michael has escaped the transfer. He follows Michael to a gas station, where he has killed a mechanic for his clothes, along with an employee and switches off the phone. Michael then escapes in a tow truck and causes an explosion, destroying Loomis's car in the process. Loomis was then forced to ascend to Haddonfield.

Meanwhile, Jamie lives in Haddonfield with his adoptive family, Richard and Darlene Carruthers, and their teenage daughter, Rachel. Jamie knows about his uncle Michael, but he does not realize that he is a strange man who has had nightmares about him. Richard and Darlene went out for the night, and left Rachel to take care of Jamie, causing her to spend a date with her boyfriend, Brady. After school, Rachel invites Jamie to buy ice cream and Halloween costumes. By then, Michael had arrived at Haddonfield, and almost attacked Jamie at the store.

That night, when Rachel takes a Jamie-or-treat trick, Michael goes to an electrical substation, and kills a worker by throwing it into high voltage, plunging the city into darkness. Meanwhile, Loomis arrives at Haddonfield and warns the new sheriff, Ben Meeker, that Michael has returned. Michael attacked the police station and killed all the officers. The lynch mass was formed by the townspeople to kill Michael. Rachel finds Brady having an affair with her with the sheriff's daughter, Kelly, and loses track of Jamie. After being chased by Michael, Rachel finds Jamie.

Sheriff Meeker and Loomis arrive and take the girls to the sheriff's house with Brady, Kelly, and a deputy. They blocked the house, and Loomis set out to search for Michael. With Sheriff Meeker in the basement awaiting the arrival of state police, Michael sneaks in and kills deputies and Kelly. Finding the bodies, Rachel, Jamie, and Brady realized that they were trapped inside the house. Rachel and Jamie escape to the attic when Michael shows up, but Brady keeps it off, and is killed when Michael destroys his skull. The girls climb through the window to the roof, and Jamie is safely lowered, but Michael attacks Rachel and knocks her off the roof.

Pursued by Michael, Jamie ran down the street and found Loomis. They take refuge in school, but Michael shows up and subdues Loomis before chasing Jamie through the building. Jamie travels, and falls off the stairs. Before Michael could kill him, Rachel, who survived the fall, subjected him to a fire extinguisher. The lynch mass and the state police arrived at the school after hearing the alarm sound. The lynch masses agreed to take Jamie and Rachel to the next town in a pickup truck. However, Michael climbs into a truck, and kills the men. With Rachael behind the wheel, he constantly tries to get rid of Michael. He managed to do it, and then stuffed it in a truck, sent him flying into a ditch near an abandoned quarry. Sheriff Meeker, who survived the lynch mob members, and the state police arrived, but when Jamie approached Michael and touched his hand, he got up. Meeker, the state police, and the lynch mass unceasingly shot Michael before falling into the pit.

Loomis and Sheriff Meeker took the girls home; Darlene and Richard, who arrived home, entertaining their traumatized children. When Darlene climbs upstairs to run Jamie's bath, she is suddenly attacked by Jamie, who is now accustomed to Michael's anger. Loomis heard Darlene's scream and race in the middle of the stairs. She saw the horrific sight of Jamie's unsteady standing at the top of the stairs, wearing a clown mask, holding a pair of scissors in his hand, and his costume covered in blood. Loomis turned his back on the wall and raised his gun to shoot him. Sheriff Meeker stopped Loomis and paralyzed him. Loomis actually kneels, like Rachel, Richard, and Sheriff Meeker watched in horror.

Production

After Halloween III: Season of the Witch , Moustapha Akkad wants to move further with the series, and bring back Michael Myers. Producer Paul Freeman, a friend of Akkad with a long list of credits for his name, explained to Fangoria magazine in 1988 that everyone came out of Halloween III saying, "Where is Michael?" John Carpenter was approached by Cannon Films, who recently completed the 1986 release of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, to write and direct the Halloween 4 . Debra Hill plans to produce the film, while Carpenter works with Dennis Etchison who, under the pseudonym Jack Martin, has written novels from both Halloween II and Halloween III: Season of Witch (1982) wrote a script for Halloween 4 . Originally, Joe Dante was Carpenter's choice for the director on the project itself.

However, Akkad rejects the Etchison script, calling it "too brilliant" and insisting that every new sequel Halloween should display Myers as a meat and blood killer. In an interview, Etchison explained how he received a phone call that informed him of the rejection of his manuscript. Etchison said, "I received a call from Debra Hill and she said, 'Dennis, I just want you to know that John and I have sold our interest in the title' Halloween 'and unfortunately, your script is not part of the deal."

Carpenter and Hill have signed all their rights to Akkad, which gained ownership. Akkad said, "I just got back to the basics of Halloween on Halloween 4 and that was the most successful." As Carpenter refused to continue his involvement with the series, a new director was sought. Dwight H. Little, who is from Ohio, succeeded Carpenter. Little has previously directed episodes for Freddy's Nightmares and Bloodstone movies.

Write

On February 25, 1988, author Alan B. McElroy, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was brought in to write a script for Halloween 4 . The writer's strike will begin on March 7 that year. This forced McElroy to develop the concept, toss the story, and submit the final draft in less than eleven days. McElroy came up with the idea of Brittany "Britti" Lloyd, daughter of Laurie Strode, chased by her uncle, who had escaped from Ridgemont after a ten-year coma. Dr. Samuel Loomis, who also survived the fire explosion at the end of Halloween II, went to find Michael with Sheriff Meeker. The setting of the place was once again Haddonfield, Illinois. The character Laurie Strode was revealed to have died in a car accident, leaving Britti with the Carruthers family, which included Rachel, the daughter of a seventeen-year-old family. The Britti name was later changed to Jamie, a tribute to actress Laurie Strode, Jamie Lee Curtis.

McElroy memberi tahu Fangoria :

When I first saw the originals, I dated a girl and took her to a theater in Boston to see her. We were the only ones in the place, but he climbed me. When Halloween II came out, I was really surprised and saw it, and I had the best time. So when the director, Dwight Little, asked me to write the script, I jumped at the chance. Here I will bring Shape - Michael Myers - live again. This is a part of film history. He's really an icon.

In the original design, Sheriff Ben Meeker had to be killed during Shape's attack on Meeker's home. The fire will start in the basement and burn the whole house. The scene on the roof with Shape, Rachel, and Jamie should be engulfed in fire. It's cut because of budget problems. The soap "sinetron" is added more to the film, which includes teen triangles and their relationship situation. Rachel dated Brady, who also had sex with Kelly Meeker. In addition, at the end of the story, Jamie was originally intended to kill his adoptive mother, Darlene Carruthers, while drawing a bath, and became evil. This idea was rejected for Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989).

Casting

The cast of Halloween 4 included only one actor from the first two films, Donald Pleasence, who changed his role as Samuel Loomis, psychiatrist Michael Myers. Before McElroy's script was selected, the producers asked Jamie Lee Curtis to re-act as Laurie Strode, the original hero. Curtis has become a success in the film industry and has been credited with his role in films such as Trading Places (1983) and A Fish Called Wanda (1988). Curtis refused and did not want to continue his participation in the film, even though he returned for the seventh movie Halloween . As a result, his character was written and allegedly died in a car accident, described briefly in the film.

The script introduces the seven-year-old daughter of Laurie Strode, Jamie Lloyd. Melissa Joan Hart has auditioned for the role, among various other girls. Against him is Danielle Harris, who previously starred in One Life to Live as Samantha Garretson. Rebecca Schaeffer has auditioned for the role of Rachel Carruthers, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Twenty-three-year-old Ellie Cornell has also auditioned. Cornell has chosen to audition for Halloween 4 and The A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Masters (1988) as a Christian Parker role, after Patricia Arquette refused to return as a Christian. Cornell chose Halloween 4 and got Rachel's role. Beau Starr plays the new Sheriff, Ben Meeker, replacing Sheriff Lee Brackett (Charles Cyphers), and Kathleen Kinmont plays Sheriff's daughter, Kelly. George P. Wilbur plays a role to play Michael Myers.

Filming

The subject of photography began on April 11, 1988. Instead of filming in Pasadena, California (the original filming location and standing for Haddonfield) due to the high cost increases, the filming took place in Salt Lake City, Utah. While filming took place in March, during the spring, producers were forced to import large leaves and pumpkins, which they would use to create pumpkins by painting them oranges, which were also made during the making of the original Halloween film. me. "One of the clear challenges in making part four of anything is by attracting the attention of contemporary audiences in old characters and themes," says director Dwight H. Little. "What I'm trying to do is capture the true atmosphere of Halloween and take on many new opportunities. What we're trying to do is walk the thin line between horror and mystery. Halloween 4 will not into a kind of ax-on-forehead film. "Paul Freeman agrees. "This movie does contain some funny moments, but it's not from spoof or shit variation, it's the humor that comes from the movie situation and quickly turns into terror."

George P. Wilbur, who plays Michael Myers for the film, wore a hockey hat under the costume to make himself look more physically memorable. During the filming, the cast and crew made it a point to make it easier for Danielle Harris, because she was just a young man at the time, and made sure that she was not afraid of being too bad and knew that nothing was real; For this purpose, Wilbur regularly takes off the mask in front of him to remind him that it's just a movie and he will not hurt him.

Late night scenes cause problems with the players. Garlan Wilde, a gaffer for the film, was injured during a scene between Brady and Shape when he dropped the light and accidentally cut off his wrist. He was rushed to the hospital. Additionally, while filming a scene on the roof, Ellie Cornell cut her stomach open on a large nail while sliding down the roof, though she continued filming the scene despite losing a large amount of blood. During most of the night scenes, Donald Pleasence becomes so cold that he wears a hat for most of the scene, unbeknownst to the crew. This caused more than six hours of footage to be re-recorded. The photoshoot lasted about 41 days and Ellie Cornell and Danielle Harris were asked to be on site for the 36 days.

During the filming, it was considered that Captain Kirk's customized mask of 1975 was reused for the film. However, the mask is long gone and newly purchased from a local costume store. The producers want to test and see what will be seen without edits. The school scene was filmed and when reviewing the producers did not like how the mask changed. It allegedly adjusted again but did not match the original, and the manufacturer felt it was too old and went for a new mask. Some scenes must be re-recorded with new masks. The only remaining scene was when Loomis was thrown through a glass door; when Michael appeared behind him, unchanging face and blond hair visible.

After seeing the rough pieces of the film, director Dwight H. Little and producer Moustapha Akkad decided the film violence was too soft, and so an extra day of "blood shooting" began. The special effects of make-up artist John Carl Buechler (director of Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood ) were brought in to create a thumb on the forehead that killed and twisted the redneck neck seen in the final piece of the film.

Music

The score was done by Alan Howarth, who has helped John Carpenter on Halloween II and Halloween III. Howarth got approval from Dwight H. Little before he could accept the offer, creating a new score that referenced the original but with a touch of synthesizer. Howarth also included new songs such as "Jamie Nightmare", "Return of the Shape", and "Police Station". The soundtrack was released to the Compact Disc on September 28, 1988.
