Plot

Kylie Lovett and Sophie Smith were good friends since they were babies. Before they started seventh grade at Meridian High School, the girls went shopping for clothes to wear on the first day of school. They both end up buying matching jeans that have a red dragon embroidered crawling on the left leg. However, Kylie immediately decided that it would not be cool to be all "fit-fit", so it's fair that none of them wear them.

On the first day, Sophie wore a lime green corduroy to keep her promise, but felt sick when Kylie appeared wearing a dragon jeans. Realizing her mistake, Kylie immediately apologizes and explains how she's in a hurry so she forgets about the compromise. The two friends then meet up with Joel Leo, Kylie's neighbor and family friend, and Sophie develops a crush on her.

While taking the bus home after school, Kylie tells Sophie that she signed them both to get the fun. Although Sophie is not enthusiastic about the idea, Joel encourages her to participate because she knows that she is a great gymnast. After practicing their routine many times, the girls finally attended trials, and Kylie finally made herself stupid in front of everyone. When the list was posted on another day, Sophie was happy that she made the team but Kylie was chosen to be the team mascot, which happens to be a donkey.

During an exhilarating exercise, Sophie gradually became part of the "cool guy," composed of Queen Bee Keisha Reyes (who called Sophie "Bitsy"), her friend Courtney Knox, and Amie and Marie Gildencrest; all of them also cheerleading. When Keisha hosts a party at her home, Sophie is invited when Kylie is not around, but Sophie persuades Kylie and Joel to attend. Just minutes after arriving, Kylie and Joel decide to leave because they find the party boring, but Sophie rudely refuses to go with them and stay. She finally talks to Scott Hersh, has a crush on Kylie, but does not know that Scott is Keisha's ex-boyfriend. On Halloween Ball, Sophie is ignored by the cool crowds and Kylie & amp; Joel after Sophie danced with Scott.

Sophie decides to apologize to Kylie, but is furious when Kylie mocks the cheerleaders at a school game. This led to Kylie's suspension of the squad, and a new mascot was brought in. But the new mascot is not as good as his job, and the school team will lose the game. Sophie came up with an emergency plan, and after a quick discussion, the squad decided to bring Kylie back. The Mules finally won the game, and Kylie & amp; Sophie made up. Kylie later reveals that Joel loves Sophie, and Sophie tells him that she likes him back.

Reception

Weekly Publishers found it offered a convincing portrayal of high school, with its emphasis on becoming popular, despite occasional discoveries. Go.com finds it has slightly more substance than its title, despite its emphasis on consumerism; although intended for teenagers, suitable for ages 8 and up. Common Sense Media wrote "Easy to read on fitting in unfit cheer." and "this book is not entirely inappropriate for younger readers, but much more suited for children facing similar problems, readers 11."
