Cast
Many of the characters depicted by the The Office cast are based on the English version of the show. While these characters usually have the same attitudes and perceptions with their British counterparts, the roles have been redesigned to better suit American performances. The show is known for its generally large cast sizes, with many actors and actresses known primarily for their improvised work. Steve Carell plays Michael Scott, Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton Branch. Loosely based on David Brent, the English Gervais character, Scott is a stupid and lonely man, trying to win friends as an office comedian, usually makes himself look bad in the process. Rainn Wilson describes Dwight Schrute, who, by Gareth Keenan, is the Assistant Regional Manager, although the character often fails to include "to" in his title. John Krasinski describes Jim Halpert, sales representative, assistant manager, and prankster, based on Tim Canterbury, and fell in love with Pam Beesly, the receptionist. Jenna Fischer plays Pam, which is based on Dawn Tinsley. He is shy, but in many cases a cohort with Jim in his joke on Dwight. B. J. Novak plays Ryan Howard, based on Ricky Howard and Neil Godwin, who at the end of the fourth season were arrested when acting as Vice President, North East Region and New Media Director, returned to Scranton as temporary in the fifth season. On the "Frame Toby" episode, Novak characters leave the office to travel to Thailand. Novak actually took time off from the show to appear in the Quentin Tarantino movie, Inglourious Basterds , though he still continues his role in the next season.
This event includes many supporting characters who play the role of office workers. Angela Martin, Oscar Martinez, and Kevin Malone, based on Keith Bishop, are office accountants, and played by Angela Kinsey, Oscar Nunez, and Brian Baumgartner, respectively. Schrute, Halpert, Phyllis Lapin-Vance (played by Phyllis Smith), Stanley Hudson (played by Leslie David Baker), and Andy Bernardus (played by Ed Helms) wrote the sales division of Dunder Mifflin Scranton. Although not one of the original cast members, Andy is considered by many to be one of the leading actors and in the 6th episode of the "Saber" season he added to the opening credits. Kate Flannery describes Meredith Palmer, Promiscuous Supplier Chief Representative, writer-actress Mindy Kaling describes Kelly Kapoor, Customer Service Representative who is obsessed with pop culture, writer Paul Lieberstein plays Toby Flenderson, Grim Human Resources representative who goes to Costa Rica at the end of the fourth season, who returned to replace Holly Flax, portrayed by Amy Ryan, Michael's love interest. Creed Bratton plays a fictional version of himself as a Quality Assurance Officer of the office. Other characters include Warehouse Superintendent Darryl Philbin, played by Craig Robinson, and Jan Levinson, a former employee of Dunder Mifflin and Michael's ex-boyfriend, described by Melora Hardin, though he was only present at the start of the season. Also Erin Hannon is played by Ellie Kemper, debuting in season five as a new receptionist after Pam goes to Michael Scott Paper Company. She is the new love of Andy.
