The inflatable costume or costumes that expand in the air are the costumes pumped around the wearer using a battery-powered blower that sucks air into the costume. The costume usually stands as high as 9-10 feet when pumped.
The inflatable costume is usually used by mascots and began to appear in the 1990s. One of the first blowing mascots was Lil 'Red of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Most NBA teams have inflatable costumes.
In the UK, inflatable costumes are becoming more popular, and many people wear them for fun at parties etc. This is a smaller costume version worn by mascots in the US. They are used by stepping into a costume, turning on a small electric fan and then pulling the rope around the neck, and the costume quickly expands.
Popular costumes include inflatable sumo wrestlers, ballerinas, cowboys, cow costumes, pig costumes and chicken costumes.
