Origin

The image of Southern primadona was developed in the South during the pre-war era. It is based on unmarried young women in the upper classes of South society who own plantations.

Characteristics

The image of a southern prima donna is often characterized by fashion elements such as hoop skirts, bodice, pantalet, broad-brimmed straw hat, and gloves. Since tannery signs are considered working class and outdated during this era, parasols and fans are also frequently represented.

Southern Belles are expected to marry respectable young men, and become women of a community dedicated to family and society. The Southern pattern of the prima donna is characterized by Southern hospitality, beauty cultivation, and solemn but fervent attitudes.

For example, Sallie Ward, born in the Southern Kentucky aristocracy in South Antebellum, is called the Southern tribe.

Criticism

The Southern Belle archetype has been criticized as part of an overall idealization of the South American era of Antebellum in popular culture. Slavery greatly affected the region's economy during the plantation era. In turn, the beautiful image of the Southern plantation is considered by many to be insensitive to the fate of the slaves.
