Pre-production begins after the end of the Writer of America Writers strike from 2007 to 2008, with Depp collaborating with the authors about story design. The subject of photography lasts for 106 days between June and November 2010, with locations in Hawaii, the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico and California. Plot

After a failed attempt to rescue his first partner, Joshamee Gibbs, in London, Captain Jack Sparrow was brought before King George II. The King wanted Jack to guide the expedition to the Fountain of Youth before King Ferdinand and the Spanish Navy could find it. Long-time enemy Jack, Captain Hector Barbossa, now privateer in service to the British Navy after losing his feet and ships, Black Pearl , which he says drowned, is on his way to the expedition.

Jack declines the offer and runs off. He meets his father, Captain Teague, who warns Jack about the Fountain ritual. Jack learns someone imitating his identity to recruit a crew to find Fountain. The swindler is Angelica, Jack's former lover, and the cruel Blackbeard pirate princess, who practices voodoo magic and uses the mythical "Sword of Triton" that controls her ship, Anne's Revenge . While Jack was destroyed on Blackbeard's ship, Gibbs escaped the execution by memorizing and destroying Jack's map showing the location of the Fountain, forcing Barbossa to take him.

Meanwhile, after a failed rebellion on the vessel Queen Anne's Revenge, Jack is forced to guide the crew to Fountain. Blackbeard searched for the power of the Fountain to avoid the fateful encounter he had fated with a "one-legged man", who happened to be Barbossa. Jack had to find two silver cups on the missing Juan Ponce de LeÃÆ'³n ship, Santiago . The Fountain shall simultaneously be drunk by two persons of the cup. Drinking from a cup containing a mermaid tear will prolong life; second person died, the rest of their life life transferred to other drinkers. Jack also discovered that the Black Pearl was captured and shrunk before being added to the Blackbeard collection from other shrinking vessels in the bottle.

The Queen Anne's Revenge heads to Whitecap Bay to discover and harvest mermaids tears. After successfully fishing in a mermaid named Tamara, he summoned another mermaid to attack the crew before Jack caused an explosion that scared them. A mermaid named Syrena was caught, but Philip Swift, a captive missionary, fell in love with him. Reaching the ship Ponce de LeÃÆ'³n on uncharted island, Angelica and Blackbeard forced Jack to take both trophies. Jack puts a decaying and decaying ship, only to find Barbossa there. Both suspect that Spain had taken the cup, after they were not found on the ship.

Jack and Barbossa team to sneak into the Spanish camp and steal the trophy. Barbossa reveals he just wants to take revenge against Blackbeard for attacking the Black Pearl, and his legs are amputated. Jack and Barbossa escape with trophies. Meanwhile, Syrena, avenged Philip's love, deceived with tears. Blackbeard collects it, letting it die from dehydration while Philip is forced to go with them. Jack returns with a bowl and a bargain with Blackbeard for Angelica's safety, the magical compass confiscated by Jack (which they took from him before sending him for a trophy), and the release of Gibbs. In return, Jack vows to give Blackbeard a cup and take him to the Fountain; Blackbeard agrees, and Gibbs is freed with a compass.

At Fountain, Blackbeard's crew was confronted by Barbossa and his men and they fought while Barbossa and Blackbeard fought. The Spaniards suddenly came, intending to destroy the Fountain, believing that his strength was an abomination to God. They destroy the cup and throw it into the swamp. When Barbossa stabbed Blackbeard with a poisoned sword, Angelica pulled him out but was cut and poisoned. Jack notices Angelica poisoned and starts frantically looking for swamps for trophies. Barbossa acquired Blackbeard's magic sword and gained control of Queen Anne's Revenge and his crew. Despite the resistance of the Blackbeard crew, the Spaniards managed to lower the pillars, destroying the Fountain of Youth. Spanish troops leave after the fountain is destroyed. Philip is badly injured, but he returns to free Syrena. He helps Jack take the lost cup and gives them to him, telling him not to waste his tears. Syrena returns to Philip who is dying. She says she can save her if she asks for it. When he asked for his forgiveness, he kissed her and brought her into the water.

With Blackbeard and Angelica almost near death, Jack takes the remaining water droplets from the crushed fountain and places tears on one of them. Knowing that one of them had to be sacrificed, he wanted Angelica to drink from a cup of tears. Instead, Blackbeard drank it, asking his daughter to save him. Angelica agrees and drinks from the second cup. Jack is annoyed at losing Angelica, but reveals that he made a mistake about a cup containing tears. Neither of them was happy, and they both believed Jack was deliberately deceiving them. Angelica's wound was healed when Fountain spilled Blackbeard's body, killing him.

Eventually, Jack and Angelica confess their love for each other, but he does not believe in his intentions (realizing that he might try to avenge his father) and touching him with cay. Now holding Blackbeard's magic sword, Barbossa becomes the captain of Queen Anne's Revenge and returns to piracy. Jack finds Gibbs, who has been using the compass to search for Revenge . He reclaimed the increasingly smaller Black Pearls and other captured vessels in the bottle, carrying them in burlap sacks. The two left, hoping to return the Black Pearls to their original size and continue to live the life of pirates.

In the post-credit scene, Jack's voodoo doll made by Blackbeard washes the waterfront and is discovered by Angelica, who then smiles.

Production

Development

Shortly before the premiere of At the End of the World , Jerry Bruckheimer declared that this was the end of the trilogy, but the idea of a spin-off was still possible. After the successful opening weekend of the film, Dick Cook, then chairman of Walt Disney Studios, said he was interested in the fourth installment. Los Angeles Times also reports that the rights to the book have been purchased. Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio began working on the script in 2007, but they were interrupted by the 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike, and only resumed in mid-2008.

In June 2009, Bruckheimer declared Disney would prefer the fourth installment of Pirates to be released before The Lone Ranger movie, which he, Johnny Depp, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio had has been working for release on May 20, 2011. He hopes Gore Verbinski will return to direct the fourth movie, as his film adaptation of BioShock has been delayed. Since Verbinski was not available due to his commitment to Rango in the same year, Bruckheimer suggested Rob Marshall, whom he considered to be the "premiere filmmaker," stated that "Every movie [Marshall] makes me think unique and different.. "On July 21, Marshall accepted the job, because" a whole new storyline and a series of characters, it's new, and that's important to me. " Marshall said the film gave him a long-awaited opportunity to work with Depp, and that his briefing was aided by his experience as a choreographer - "the series of actions feels like a big production figure." On September 11, 2009, at the Disney D23 convention during the Disney show, Cook and Johnny Depp, in full Captain Jack Sparrow costume, announced that the fourth film Pirates was under development. The title was announced as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides . Marshall visited the Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland for inspiration, eventually paying homage to the skeleton holding a magnifying glass on the Ponce de LeÃÆ'³n ship. The appearance of "Old Bill", a pirate trying to share rum with a cat, was also filmed but cut. Pintel and Ragetti were originally supposed to perform, but director Rob Marshall opted out of the idea because he feared their role would be cut.

Cook resigned in September 2009 after working for Disney for over 38 years. Depp's confidence in the Caribbean Pirate On Stranger Tides was somewhat shaken after his resignation, with Depp explaining that "There is a gap, a gap in my current enthusiasm, all born in that office." Depp also explained that Cook was one of the few people who accepted his role as Jack Sparrow: "When things went sideways in the first Pirates movie and others in the studio were less enthusiastic about my interpretation of the characters, Dick was there there from the first moment He trusted me ".

Write

During the production of Dead Man's Chest and End of the World, writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio discovered the 1987 Tim Powers On Stranger Tides novel, which they regarded as a good foundation to base the "new chapter" in the series Pirates . Disney bought the rights to the novel in April 2007. Rossio stated that he and Elliot had considered using Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth in the story before reading the book, "but whenever you say those words, the Powers novel comes to mind. work in that field without going to the area that Tim has explored. "However, they deny that it will be a straightforward version of the novel:" Blackbeard is from the book, and in the book there is a girl's character as well, but Jack Sparrow is not in and so does Barbossa, so I would not call this an adaptation. "Rossio declared it to be a stand-alone film," sort of like James Bond, "rather than a" designed to be a trilogy "from the previous installment. They hope to "design a story that will support the new character," as characters like Will Turner will not return. Bruckheimer added that there was a decision to "streamline the story a bit, make it a bit simpler and do not have a lot of characters to follow", since the number of characters and subplots in On the End of the World caused the movie to have a heavy length. The duo decided to use another sea myth that was alluded to in the previous episode: mermaid, which is briefly referenced in this book. The mermaid role develops in the script, which includes a broad sequence of attacks.

Depp is deeply involved with story design, often meeting writers to show what he or she is interested in, and in Rossio's words, "engaging in storylines, connecting characters, creating moments we will focus on, shaping and then returning." Among suggestions Depp who turns Phillip into a missionary and has a Spanish contingent following the protagonist. After that, Rob Marshall and executive producer John DeLuca meet Rossio and Elliot, and make changes on their own, including building a female cast.

Casting

Depp was signed to return as Captain Jack Sparrow in September 2008, saying that he would return if the script was good. Almost a year later, Disney announced that Depp would be paid $ 55.5 million for his role, realizing that without him the franchise would "die and be buried." Geoffrey Rush expressed interest in returning to his role as Barbossa, and Bruckheimer later confirmed his presence. Rush is positive on Barbossa for losing his legs, as he considers the flaw makes him "more angry, stronger and tenacious as a character", and must work with substitute casting teams for accurate depiction of limp and crutch use, especially during sword fight scenes. While the production team considers pegleg to be put on Rush's legs, a tight schedule causes it to be replaced with a digitally replaced blue sock, with a knob on a shoe to give Rush a reference for his journey. Three other actors from the previous film returned, Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Greg Ellis as Lieutenant Theodore Groves, and Damian O'Hare as Lt. Gilette. Keith Richards also has a cameo, repeating his role as Captain Teague from At World End ; he and Depp tried to persuade Mick Jagger to audition for part of an old pirate. The previous cast members Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley stated that they would not repeat their role, as they wanted to engage in different films. They both think the plot that involves their character is as far as it can be done. On August 1, 2009, Bill Nighy expressed his desire to return as Davy Jones, who died in the previous film, said the possibility to raise the character, but in the end, his inclusion was canceled. On 5 February 2010, Mackenzie Crook also announced that he would not repeat his role as Ragetti, stating, "They did not ask me, but actually I did not mind at all.I'm the first fan especially and I think the trilogy we made is very good I almost want them to leave it there. "

New cast members include Ian McShane, who plays the famous pirate and the main antagonist of the movie, Blackbeard, and PenÃÆ' Â © lope Cruz, who plays Angelica, the love interest of Jack Sparrow. According to Marshall, McShane was chosen because "he can play something evil but there is always humor behind him too" and the actor accepts the job because the script is "very funny and fascinating" and an opportunity to work with Marshall. His beard takes an hour and a half to apply, and McShane likens the character's costume to "a real biker pirate - all blacks." Marshall says that Cruz is the only actress to be considered for the role, as he fits the description as "an actress who can not only touch Johnny and match it but also need for all the things that Jack Sparrow is on the way. He must be funny, smart, smart, sneaky and beautiful, and invited him to a role as they wrapped up production Nine The actress spent two months working and learning to fend that role During filming Cruz discovered she was pregnant, leading the costume department to redesigned his wardrobe to make it more elastic, and producer to hire his brother MÃÆ'³nica Cruz to duplicate for PenÃÆ'Â © lope in the risky scene.Depp recommends Stephen Graham, who works with him on Public Enemies to play Scrum, a Machiavellian pirate and a sidekick for Jack Sparrow, and Richard Griffiths for the role of King George II, because Depp is h fans by Griffiths on Withnail and me . Sam Claflin, a recent drama school graduate with television experience, was chosen to play Philip's missionary, and British actor Paul Bazely also joined the cast. The Spanish news website El Pais reported that the film had four Spanish actors: Cruz, BergÃÆ'¨s-Frisbey, ÃÆ' â € Å" Jaenada's scars, and Juan Carlos Vellido. Jaenada was selected for both his work at Losers and recommendations by Cruz.

Casting for a mermaid requires the actress to have natural breasts - without implants. As Bruckheimer explained to EW , "I do not think they did breast augmentation in the 1700s, [...] So it's natural that people here say, 'We want real people. '"Marshall invited the Spanish-French actress ÃÆ' â,¬ strid BergÃÆ'¨s-Frisbey to play Syrena after seeing him in a French magazine article about a rising actress. BergÃÆ'¨s-Frisbey must take English lessons, swim and control the breath for the role. The rest of the mermaid shoots, like Australian supermodel Gemma Ward, were chosen for having "exotic flavors, other world senses, but also under that layer of lethal quality", according to Marshall, and had to take swimming lessons to study such movements as dolphins and egg beater.

Filming

The subject of photography began on June 14, 2010, in Hawaii. Filming was moved to California in August 2010, mainly on Long Beach beaches and Whitecap Bay recreation conducted at Universal Studios backlot, as Hawaii's original location at Halona Cove is overwhelmed by strong waves. After a short photo shoot in Puerto Rico, with locations at Palomino Island and Fort of San CristÃÆ'³bal in San Juan, production was moved to England in September, where main photography was wrapped on November 18 after 106 shooting days. Locations include Hampton Court Palace in London, Knole House in Kent, and Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. The interior was shot at Pinewood Studios London, and a replica of an 18th century London road built in a backlot beside the sound stage. The producers are also considering using New Orleans as a location. In October, security was violated on the British website when a celebrity imitator gained access to filming at Old Royal Naval College by dressing up as Captain Jack.

After the joint production of Dead Man's Chest and End of the World spent over $ 300 million, Disney decided to give a lower budget to the fourth installment. Many costs have to be cut, including moving primary production to Hawaii and London, where tax credits are more profitable, and have shorter shooting schedules and fewer scenes featuring special effects than At the Edge of the World . A more rigorous schedule - according to Bruckheimer, "We have a 22-week post, and for pictures like this, with nearly 1,200 visual effects images, usually 40 weeks" - meaning that Marshall oversees sequence editing during filming. The UK financial statements of the film reveal total expenditures of £ 240.7 million ($ 410.6 million) in 2013, with Disney receiving a $ 32.1 million cut from the UK government, making Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides the most expensive film ever made to date.

Bruckheimer says the decision to make the movie in 3D was made because it became "immersive filming, I think it made you part of the actual shoot because you're part of the screen." Bruckheimer describes it as the first main "exterior film" to be taken in 3D, since Avatar is mostly done in the sound stage. Initially Marshall was not very interested in 3D, but the director eventually regarded it as a movie that could benefit from its format. "You are adventuring and with 3D experience you are in that adventure." Although the original plan was to add 3D effects during postproduction, a decision was made to photograph digitally with a 3D camera. Only one sequence is taken conventionally and requires 3D conversion. The cameras are an improved version of the one developed by James Cameron for Avatar , which is made more concise for extra mobility. This means the camera can be taken to a location like the Hawaiian forest.

The Queen Anne's Revenge is built on Sunset , the same vessel used to describe the Black Pearl in previous installments. In February 2010, Sunset had sailed from Long Beach to a shipyard in Hawaii for reform, where the big worry was to impose it, with three stories, without sacrificing actual seakeeping. Given that Blackbeard intended to be the cruelest pirate to appear in the series, searching for Queen Anne's Revenge was unpleasant, with a blood-red screen, various burning elements, and skull and bone ornaments (drawing inspiration from Ossuary Sedlec in the Czech Republic). Damage from gunfire was also added to show that "not only is Blackbeard dying, but his ship is also a dying ship". The character of the ship also gets inspiration from the Blackbeard pirate flag. The HMS replica ship Surprise is used for Barbossa ships, HMS Providence , and all scenes on the ship Providence shot on Long Beach beach. because Surprises can not sail to Hawaii. Over 50 designs are considered for the Fountain of Youth, with the latter representing a temple built by an ancient civilization around the Fountain, which itself lies in a round rocky structure to represent "the circle of life". Locations leading to the Fountain were shot in the Hawaiian archipelago on Kauai and Oahu, but the Fountain itself was built on the 007 Stage at Pinewood.

Effects

On Stranger Tides uses 1,112 computer-generated image images, performed by ten visual effects firms. Cinesite visual effects watcher Simon Stanley-Clamp claims that the hardest part is doing the 3D effect: "Rotoscoping is complicated. Cleaning plates is a double job, and tracking should be right." The leader companies, with more than 300 securities each, are Industrial Light & amp; Magic - is responsible for, among other things, mermaids and most water effects - and Moving Picture Company, which creates digital vessels and environmental extensions, such as changing the weather and designing cliffs and waterfalls. Filming a mermaid involves eight models-actresses, who portray them out of the water, as well as 22 synchronized swimming athletes and a group of stuntwomen, both wearing motion captives to be replaced by digital mermaids. The mermaid corpse is depicted by the plaster model. This design tries to avoid the traditional representation of mermaids in paintings and literature, instead going into scaly bodies with translucent membranes inspired by jellyfish and fabrics used in ballet tutorials. To make mermaids more threatening underwater, the actress's faces have some digital touches in the underwater scenes, adding sharp teeth and shiny-scale quality fish to the skin. ILM also handles Blackbeard's death, in which Ian McShane's actual performance is covered by digital doubles that turn it into "blood and boiling masses," and formations like storms that represent "fountains that take their lives." Cinesite handles footwear recreation London and Barbossa, CIS Hollywood performs 3D corrections and small shots, and Method Studios creates matte paintings.

Music

The movie's score was written by Hans Zimmer, who has worked on all previous entries in the franchise; became the main composer for the second and third installments. Zimmer says that he tries to include the sound of rock n 'roll, as he feels "pirates are rock' n 'rollers many, many years ago", and Spanish elements, which led to collaborations with Mexican guitarist Rodrigo y Gabriela and tango written by PenÃÆ' Â © lope Cruz's brother, Eduardo. American composer Eric Whitacre contributed some chore-based cues, as well as a permanent assistant to Geoff Zanelli.

"The online reviewer James Berardinelli considers the script" a bit more than a clothesline to dangle all the required pieces ", and USA Today ' s Claudia Puig found On Stranger Tides "familiar and predictable... often confusing and full of meaningless detail."

Mike Scott of The Times-Picayune mentions that "while this last chapter is not sharp enough to restore the feeling of discovery that makes the first exit so appealing, it's enough to make up for most of the missteps that make the third so distracting the arrgh- induce. "Write to The AV Club , Tasha Robinson describes On Stranger Tides as "a film smaller than previous installments, based on design and needs," and feels that "the series needs streamlining" as the movie "feels light, but it's still better than bloating. "

On Stranger Tides also got a positive review; some critics find the film entertaining and well made. Richard Roeper gave the movie B, describing it as "the most exciting creation since the first", calling the story "pure cartoons, but easier to follow than other sequels," and summing up as "the franchise gets tired, but Penelope gives him energy." Along the same line, Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post gave the film three of the four stars, writing that it was "fresh and joyful when the first day Jack Sparrow struck his buckle, putting in a new reckless energy into a franchise that showed no sign of a" display mark ". He said that Marshall "quickly and without fuss gives pieces of action set and sharp-eyed escape" and praised the appearance of Depp, Cruz, and McShane. Ray Bennett of The Hollywood Reporter assumes that Marshall "showed remarkable talent with all his fighting and sword fights, and he handled 3D well," and welcomed the PenÃÆ'Â © lope Cruz character, saying he "brought him Kindness Oscar winner "and" live sexual tension "with Depp. Writing for The Globe and Mail , Rick Groen found action scenes that ranged from "only competent to downright messy", but he was pleased with the overall result, calling McShane a "fresh villain" the "stentorian tone accepted anywhere ". Variety's Andrew Barker considers movie derivatives, but accessible. "It has no original idea and still does not make sense, but loses all the pretense it should be". He praised Geoffrey Rush, stating that he "not only got the funniest lines and reaction shots, but also started sucking a lot of the dandy charm that was once the stock and the Depp trade."
