College career

After an incredible preparatory career in which he became the most praised female basketballer since Candace Parker, Delle Donne received a basketball scholarship from the University of Connecticut. However, in early June 2008, Delle Donne suddenly dropped out of the Connecticut summer school program after just two days in Storrs. Delle Donne is very close to her family, especially her sister, Lizzie, who has cerebral palsy and is blind and deaf. He is not ready to be separated from his family. Gene, Elena's brother and middle child of the Delle Donne family, will tell in ESPN's 2012 story about her sister:

Her relationship with Lizzie was huge. It's very close. This is a big reason why he is like a homebody who came home from UConn, because he really wanted to be around Lizzie and experience Lizzie who grabbed him and sniffed him and only spent quality time with him.

A week after leaving Connecticut, Delle Donne said by phone from her Wilmington home that she had "a lot of personal problems to fix, only my family understood what was going on, now I'm going to take a long private break." He took the same break before the 2007-08 season in high school.

On August 16, 2008, Delle Donne announced she would not receive a scholarship because of fatigue, instead of deciding to enroll at the University of Delaware and join their volleyball team as a walk-on. He plays the center batter at UD for the 2008-09 season. The Delaware Blue Hens 2008 completed their season with a 19-16 record. They are 9-5 in their conference (Colonial Athletics Association) and win the conference tournament. They got a place in the NCAA Tournament, but lost to Oregon in the first round. Delle Donne did not continue on the volleyball team in 2009, but joined the basketball team.

On June 2, 2009, Delle Donne announced that she would play basketball for Blue Hens in the 2009-10 season as a redshirt student. In 2012, ESPN writer Graham Hays said of his return to the sport "it can not be coincidence that that year Gene returned to Delaware and worked for his father's company." In a 2016 interview with ESPN, Delle Donne also recalled a trip he took during the summer of 2009 to the school Lizzie had visited. While there, she meets another woman at school, a basketball fan who uses a wheelchair because of cerebral palsy, who tells her, "Elena, do everything you can with your abilities, like we do."

Delle Donne has a very productive new season. He averages 26.7 points per game, the third highest of all female Division I basketball players. He scored 54 points in defeat against James Madison on 18 February 2010, which was the highest single point single point by Division I basketball players that season. He was named Rookie CAA in Week six times, and players in once a week during 2009-10.

She was voted "CAE's Best Player of the Year" and "Rookie of the Year" in women's basketball by CAA coaches, director of sports and media information. This is the first time a player has won both awards in a year since Old Dominion's Lucienne Berthieu did it in 1999. No male player ever won both awards in the same season.

In his sophomore season, the team started well, but then Delle Donne started developing flu-like symptoms. In a game against Penn State, he asks to be excluded from the game, something he has never done before. After many tests, the doctors finally diagnosed him with Lyme disease. He fought for the rest of the season, but he helped his team reach the final of the conference tournament and the invitation to NIT Woman.

As a junior, Delle Donne leads the nation in scoring, finishing the season with an average of 28.1 points per game. His skills attract many fans to the Blue Hens game, with attendance up 250 percent from a year earlier. On February 16, 2012, Delle Donne scored 42 points in a win over Hofstra, surpassing 2,000 for his career. Delaware is the CAA champion, who qualified for the NCAA Women's Division Tournament Division I 2012. Delle Donne scored 39 points from 56 points of first Blue Hens in their first-round win over UALR. Delaware will lead with a halftime against Kansas in the next game, but despite Delle Donne's 34 points, Jayhawks still win.

During the 2012-13 season, Delle Donne struggled again against Lyme's disease, losing four matches due to the disease. Delle Donne returned on 12 December against Maryland and led the team with 19 points and 6 rebounds in a 69-53 defeat. This game is the biggest crowd (5,089) who has ever seen a women's basketball game at Bob Carpenter Center, homecourt Blue Hens.

Delle Donne led his team in scoring in 22 regular season games during his senior season, as well as in a 12-game rebound. He scored more than 30 points in five occasions, leading his team to a regular-season record of 27-3 entering the CAA conference tournament match.

After winning the CAA conference tournament, Blue Hens was the # 6 seed in their region in NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament 2013. Delle Donne led them to victory over # 11 West Virginia and # 3 North Carolina. The Blue Hens then lost to # 2 Kentucky, though Delle Donne had 33 points.
