Etimologi
The origin of the Oreo name is unknown, but there are many hypotheses, including the derivation of the French word or , which means gold (since the initial packaging is gold), or the Greek word ????? (/?. 'r?.?/), meaning good, beautiful, nice or well done. Others believe that the cake was named Oreo simply because the name was short and easy to pronounce. Another theory is that the name comes from the Latin Oreodaphne , the genus of the laurel family. The food writer, Stella Parks, notes in his book BraveTart: Iconic American Desserts that the original Oreo design included a laurel bouquet; and the names of some Nabisco cakes at the time of the original Oreo have botanical derivatives, including Avena, Lotus, and Helicon (from Heliconia ).

History
20th century
"Oreo Biscuit" was first developed and produced by the National Biscuit Company (now known as Nabisco) in 1912 at Chelsea's Manhattan factory in the Chelsea Market complex, located on Ninth Avenue between 15th and 16th Street. Today, this same block of Ninth Avenue is known as the "Oreo Way". The name of the Oreo was first trademarked on March 14, 1912. It was launched as a replica of the Hydrox cookie produced by the Sunshine company, which was introduced in 1908.
The original design on Oreo's face featured a bouquet of flowers around the edge of the cookie and the name "OREO" in the center. In the United States, they are sold for 25 cents per pound (453 g) in new metal tubes with clear glass tops. The first Oreo was sold on March 6, 1912, to a grocery store in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Oreo Biscuit was renamed in 1921 to "Oreo Sandwich"; in 1948, his name was changed to "Oreo Cr̮'̬me Sandwich"; and in 1974 it became "Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie", a name that remains to this day. The new design for facial cookies was launched in 1924; the modern Oreo design was developed in 1952 by William A. Turnier, incorporating the Nabisco logo. In 1920, a new type of lemon Oreo filled with lemon was introduced, as an alternative to varieties filled with white, but this was discontinued in 1924 and the original flavor was the only version available for the next few. decades.
Modern Oreo cake filling was developed by Nabisco's main food scientist, Sam Porcello, who retired from Nabisco in 1993. Porcello holds five patents directly related to his work on Oreo; he also makes a variety of Oreo pastries coated in dark chocolate and white chocolate. In the early 1990s, health issues prompted Nabisco to replace pork fat in filling cr̮'̬me with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Oreo cookies are popular with people who have certain dietary restrictions, such as vegans, because cra̬me filling does not use animal products. However, there is still a risk of cross-contamination of other dairy products made in the same production area.
Twenty-first century
From January 2006, Nabisco replaced trans fats in an Oreo cake with non-hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Nabisco started a marketing campaign in 2008, advertise the use of Oreo cookies in an online game called DSRL (which stands for "Double Stuf Racing League"), introduced the week before Super Bowl XLII. DSRL has been supported by football brothers Peyton Manning and Eli Manning; The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, also joined, challenging Mannings for the race that aired in an advertisement on January 18, 2009. Another campaign was launched for the Golden Double Stuf Oreo cookies, in which Manning's brother was challenged by Donald Trump and the character called "Double Trump", played by Darrell Hammond; The competition premiered on January 24, 2010. Mannings won both races. Another advertisement featured "Hooded Menace" threatening to take over the DSRL, with Eli Manning and Stufy (the DSRL mascot) in need of help, aired on September 14, 2010. Six days later, it was announced that Shaquille O'Neal and Apolo Ohno had joined veterans DSRL Oreo, Eli Manning and Venus Williams.
In April 2011, Oreo announced a special edition Oreo cake with blue cr̮'̬me to promote the 2011 3D animated computer movie Rio . Promotions include stickers inside each cookie package. Two contests were also announced: by completing the sticker album, consumers can win three movie tickets and a mid-size snack bar combo; and gift stickers can be found in the winning package, including trips to Rio de Janeiro, backpacks, movie theaters for a year, and 3D glasses. This promotion is available in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia, and ends on May 30, 2011.
In June 2012, Oreo posted an ad featuring an Oreo cake with a cream-colored rainbow â ⬠<â â¬
International distribution
Oreo cookies are distributed worldwide through various sales and marketing channels. As their popularity continues to grow, so does the amount of distribution that goes with it. According to the Kraft Foods company, Oreo is "The World's Bestselling Cookie". In March 2012, the Time magazine reported that Oreo cookies are available in over 100 different countries. Overall, it is estimated from the beginning of the establishment of Oreo cookies in 1912, more than 450 billion Oreos have been produced worldwide. The top five countries in terms of sales are the United States, China, Venezuela, Canada, and Indonesia.
Oreo biscuits (as they are known in the UK) were first introduced to the UK through the Sainsbury supermarket chain. It was the only store that kept Oreos in the UK for several years, until May 2008 when Kraft decided to launch Oreos entirely across the UK. It was repackaged in a more familiar British tube design, along with a 4.5M TV advertising campaign based around its slogan "twist, lick, dunk".
In the UK, Kraft partnered with McDonald's to introduce Oreo McFlurry (which has been sold in several other countries) to a number of McDonald's locations during its annual promotions of Great Tastes of America; in October 2015, Oreo McFlurry became a permanent menu at McDonald's in England. The Oreo-scented "Krushem" drinks are also sold in KFC stores across the UK.
The ingredients of the English Oreo biscuits (as listed on the English Oreo website) are slightly different from the US Oreo cookies. Unlike the US version, English Oreo originally contained whey powder, so it is not suitable for people with lactose intolerance. In addition, because whey powder is sourced from cheese made with rennet calves, the English version is also not suitable for vegetarians. On December 6, 2011, Kraft announced that the production of Oreo biscuits would start in the UK - their Cadbury factory in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was selected to produce Oreo biscuits in the UK for the first time and production began there in May 2013.
Cookie Oreo was introduced to the Indian market by Cadbury India in 2011. The biscuit industry in India is estimated to be worth about 1.8 billion dollars.
Production
According to a statement from Kim McMiller, Associate Director of Consumer Relations, a two-stage process is used to create Oreo cookies. The basic baking dough is formed into a round cake known as rotary mold at the entrance of a 300-foot (91 m) oven.
Much of Oreo's production was done at the Hershey factory in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Oreo cookies for Asian markets are produced in Indonesia, India and China, except for Japan where they are produced locally under the brand "Yamazaki-Nabisco". Oreo cookies for the European market are made in Spain; they were made in Russia (Mondel? z Rus) for consumers in some CIS countries; and those sold in Australia are manufactured in Indonesia (formerly China) or Spain, depending on the taste. Versions produced in Canada (sold under the Christie brand) include coconut oil and are sold exclusively in the region. The manufacture of Oreo biscuits started in Pakistan in early 2014, in collaboration with Mondel? Z International United States and Continental Biscuits Limited (CBL) Pakistan, at the CBL production plant in Sukkur.
Oreo boycott
In 2015, Mondel? Z announced his decision to close several American factories and move Oreo production to Mexico, encouraging the Oreo boycott. In 2016, after production begins in Mexico, the AFL-CIO encourages boycotts and publishes consumer guides to help identify Mondelz products made in Mexico.
In July 2016, Oreo cookies stopped production in Chicago.
Materials
Oreo cookie ingredients remain largely unchanged from the original, although many varieties and flavors of alternatives arise over time. Classic Oreo cookies are made using eleven main ingredients:
- Sugar
- Un-fortified flour (wheat flour, niacin, iron, thiamine mono-nitrate (vitamin B 1 ), riboflavin (vitamin B 2 ), folic acid
- High canola oleic oil and/or palm oil and/or canola oil
- Cocoa (treated with alkali)
- High fructose corn syrup
- Leavening agent (baking soda and/or monocalcium phosphate)
- Corn Starch
- Salt
- Soya lecithin
- Vanillin
- Chocolate
Controversy
Oreos contain several ingredients that have been the subject of popular controversy. Cookies are produced using high fructose corn syrup, which has associated health risks. Oreo cookies also contain vanillin, an aromatic synthetic compound found in vanilla but commonly derived from a synthetic process, and which can cause adverse effects on some individuals (regardless of source.) Soy lecithin also poses a risk to those who have soy allergies.
Nutrition
One six-pack Oreo contains 270 calories, then there are 45 calories in one cookie. Of the 45 calories, 27 comes from carbohydrates, 16.5 comes from fat, and only 1.5 calories are provided by protein.
Different Oreo flavors have varying amounts of carbohydrates: Oreo fudge chocolate contains 13g of total carbohydrates (4% of recommended daily intake) and 9g of sugar per "portion" of 3 cakes, while Oreo mint contains 25g of total carbohydrate and 18g of sugar per serving. Vitamins, minerals and proteins are found in small amounts, but Oreos do not contain vitamin A or vitamin C.

In addition to their traditional designs of two chocolate wafers separated by filling cr̮'̬me, Oreo cookies have been produced in many different varieties since they were first introduced. Beginning in early 2010, Oreo began releasing a limited edition cake with a more exotic flavor. Use as ethnic slur
The term "Oreo" has been used as a reference to insulting blacks who are considered or judged acting in a "white way." Racial slaughter can be levied as allegations that the person perpetuates "an uneven playing field for blacks". The metaphor is based on the implication that the person is essentially like a cake, "black on the outside and white on the inside".
