Jugger is a sport inspired by the 1989 film The Guate of the Jugger (released as The Blood of Heroes in the United States), where games with the same name played. The movie version was created by film director, David Webb Peoples, especially for the movie. Transformation into real sports happens independently in Germany and Australia.

Jugger as an increasingly popular sport in Germany, especially with university and college teams, with its own league. There are teams in Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Ireland, England, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, Colombia, Costa Rica, The Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, and Romania. Some sports variations are played in the US. Some follow the International version (eg Germany, Ireland, etc.) called "Sport Jugger" while others use a model that more closely resembles The Game played in a movie, most commonly referred to as "Wasteland Jugger."

The first Jugger international tournament was held in Hamburg, Germany on May 20, 2007 between the Irish team of Setanta and a number of North German teams. In 2008, Australia and Ireland came to Germany to take part in Open Germany 1, making it the first two continent tournaments in the Jugger.

Equipment

  • Skull ( Germany : jugg SchÃÆ'¤del in the "Hamburg/Dilettanten tradition"): a "ball" is made to resemble a dog skull, usually made of foam and ribbons (not the actual dog skull as in Blood of Heroes ). In Germany and Ireland, dog skulls made from foam cells, covered with latex, are used.
  • The mounds ( German : mall ): In most countries, a frustum top) using a hollow center.
  • Weapons : The 'weapons' used in the jugger are very similar to the Live Action role-playing games weapon. There are strict rules for the length of the weapon and the amount of padding used. Weapons in jugger vary in types for different countries:
    • Australian-style weapons ("Spars") each stander may have one of the following combinations, with at most one double chain and one:
      • A staff , 180 cm long, with a conspicuous 110 cm zone in one and the other in the center, creates two different hand grips. Push is not allowed
      • A Q-Tip , 200 cm long, double-ended strike zone maximum of 60 cm, thrust allowed
      • Long longsword length, 140 cm long, push allowed
      • A short sword and armor , a short sword of 85 cm, allowed to be allowed; coated armor, 60 cm in diameter
      • Two short swords, each for 85 cm
      • respectively
      • The chain , the length of 320 cm with an additional 50 cm club attached to the end of the handle (replacing the 50 cm chain). Ball chain at least 20 cm in diameter and soft.
      • The purpose of . Mal or Mound
    • German-style weapons ("Pompfen"):
      • Staff , as long as 180 cm, thrust is not allowed
      • A Q-Tip , length 200 cm, double, push allowed
      • Long longsword length, 140 cm long, push allowed
      • A short sword and armor , a short sword of 85 cm, allowed to be allowed; coated armor, 60 cm in diameter
      • Chain , length 320 cm
      • The mall is not a bet but frustum with a center hole to put the skull on
    • American-style weapons (North and South America):
      • The length of 180cm Staff , with one conspicuous end, thrust is allowed but not recommended
      • A Q-Tip , 200cm length, double, push allowed
      • Length Length , length 140cm
      • Paired Short Pompf , length 85cm each
      • Short and Shield , length 85cm for pompfen, maximum diameter 60cm for armor
      • Chain maximum length 320cm from end to end
      • Goal or Mound , similar to the German mall, is a short-sided cone with a deep well in the center to place the skull

Traditional time recording is done with gong and 100 stones : The stones are thrown into the gong to keep time. 100 stones per second, 3/3 per game. Alternatively, the drum or speaker system is used, with drummer storing the count of each tap (known as rock ). 100 stones per second, 3/3 per game. In conjunction with official equipment, smartphone apps like Jugger Stones or Jugger Match. sometimes used to keep score and/or drum beats.

Roles

A team consists of the following 8 people, 5 of whom are allowed to be in the field:

  • One qwik (sometimes spelled "fast"): Unarmed player, and the only one allowed to touch the skull
  • Chain maximum : A player armed with a chain
  • Three each four enforcers (German: Fighter, German term: Pompfer): Armed with their preferred weapon (except chains). Can handle skulls with their weapons
  • Up to three replacements , which can replace any player

Roles (in movies)

In the movie The Salute of the Jugger (or 'The Blood of Heroes'), each role is heard at least once in the dialogue:

  • Qwik - Kidda (played by Joan Chen) and other characters in the movie refer to this role several times throughout the movie.
  • Slash - Sallow (played by Rutger Hauer) is described as one (and other referring to) this role. Both Sallow and Gonzo are described as "Slash" in the movie.
  • Drive - Cim (or Big Cimber, played by Anna Katarina) or Mbulu (played by Delroy Lindo) is portrayed as such, and only once, by Sallow when he, Cim, and Mbulu are debating in the middle of the movie.
  • Back Charge - Mbulu (played by Delroy Lindo) or Cim (or Big Cimber, described by Anna Katarina) is described as such, and only once, by Sallow when he, Cim, and Mbulu was arguing in the middle of a movie.
  • Griffer - When Sallow speaks with Gonzo for the first time in the movie, the term is used by the Sallow character once, and may refer to players using in-game chains (pictured on Sallow's team by Vincent D'Onofrio , as 'Young Gar').

Rules

Australia

The goal of the game is for the Qwik team to get the skeleton of a foam dog, or jugg, to mound the opposing team to score, while minimizing the number of goals produced by the opposing team within the time limit. The role of enforcer is to defend their Qwik from the opposing players.

Position

Australian Rules Jugger is played with two teams of five juggers. Three enforcers with pompfen, one chain and one qwik .

Qwiks
Qwik is unarmed and the only player who can carry a skull. Both Qwiks start outside the center circle and when the game starts grappling with the skull. The enforcers should not enter the circle until the skull or whole body of one Qwiks leaves the circle. A Qwik's arms and arms are not considered a hit zone and can be used to block.

Courageous
The enforcers hold various layered pompfen classes (listed above)

Historically there are only a maximum of two classes of the same weapon among the other enforcers, but this restriction has been revoked. An enforcer can pin another player by resting his weapon on the hit player at any time while the player is on his knees. Even with paired shorts or Q-tips, players can only pin one opponent.

Chain The position of the chain using balls and chains of plastic and foam along the 320 cm. The chain can have a 50 cm handle (replacing the 50 cm chain) with a striking surface that can be used to mark an opponent to calculate a regular Spar penalty.

Time settings

Most games consist of two parts of 150 stones each, while the final tournament is three thirds of 150 stones. Historically saved by throwing stones into gongs, now other methods like drums or speakers are used. The rocks' beats are now separated by 1.5 seconds, when they were previously separated by 2.5 seconds to match 100 stones per half.

Click

Rock click punishment varies between countries from three to five for Spar/Pompfen and five and eight for chains . Australia plays three and five until 2017 when they adopt five and eight.

When a player is beaten by another team, they take the knee and are inactive to count the five stones.
If hit with a chain ball, they take the knee to count eight stone.
Unsafe head tapping creates a penalty on the eight-stone batter for security.

The location of a strike originates from the neck down (excluding the hand on a nucleated weapon or the entire forearm from the elbow down to qwiks). All strikes on the jugger are touch, so no need to hit the weight or try to cause injury.

ireland

Like the German and Australian Jugger, the goal is to score more points than your opponents within the time limit. This time limit is calculated by a regular tap or "rock" on a drum measuring about two seconds for each stone. A tournament game is played for two sides of a hundred stones each but during normal practice sessions there is no backup player to beat the drums so the game is usually played as the first up to 10 points or similar.

The game itself was played with two teams of five, with substitutes waiting behind the starting line. A complete team consists of a runner, a chain, two staff and a choker chain. Although weapons other than staff can be used, the staff is by far the most common in Ireland. There is only one chain per team at a time.

The pitch itself is rectangular with two "malls" (German, destination) at both ends in the form of a foam box with depression to receive the skull. "Skull", a rubber dogskull that functions as a ball, is placed in the middle of the field and at the end of the count by the referee or one of the captains, the two teams run into the middle of the field and try to score.

When both lines reach the center of the field, the players try to "knock" on each other. This is done by tapping the opponent lightly with the legal surface of your weapon in legal body parts. In Ireland this means anywhere under the neck and above the wrist. Headshots are avoided and if the pompfe touches the head before the legal target, tap the discount and the player must withdraw his weapon before hitting again. While a hit in the head after being hit on a legal target is still calculated it is favored and avoided. If both players knock at each other at the same time, or very close, both players are considered to hit and come down. It's not like in German rules where a hit in half count of each other is allowed.

When a player knocks they fall to the ground with one knee touching the ground. If they have been hit by staff or other pompfe, they live under five stones. If they hit the chain, they descend for eight stones. The count begins when the knee touches the ground and while the player can move to pick up the weapon they must return to where they were hit before they started playing. A kneeling player can also spin on top of their knees as long as they do not lift it.

While they are down other players can "pin" them by holding their staff on them. A chain player may not do this. As soon as their count is up, any player except a runner should try to stand up again. Once their knees leave the ground they are considered standing and can be beaten even though they have to "stand fully," before they can hit anyone else. As a result of this rule it is possible to abuse them by holding a pompf just above someone who is waiting to rise. They have to get up as fast as they can and they knock on five more stones as fast as they do. As a result, the rule is imposed that a pompf should pin a player on his knees or three feet away, the exception is where there are two players kneeling at close range and it is impossible to pinch one without your pompf close to the other.

The purpose of all this is to break the hole in the opposite line and allow the runner to score. After the team's second runner score is reset to one end of the field, the skull is placed in the middle by schiri, the referee, and the winning team are awarded the points. The game is quite comparable to the Hamburg jugger rules, where it came from, and at least similar to the Australian jugger. Most of the following came from IADT (Institute of Art, Design and Technology), in Dublin with plans to expand to UCD (University College Dublin) and DCU (Dublin City University), and also played at the Institute of Technology, Tralee.

United States

Various variants exist within the country. Sport Jugger is almost synonymous with European variants, with a variety of very fine rules. Another game based on the same movie is developed in Live Action Role Play Amtgard and is referred to there as "Jugging" and applies the LARP combat mechanism to the game as seen in the movie. This is basically a fighting game in LARP foam, but it is very popular. Wasteland Jugger is another variant, in which the participants wear heavy heavy armor and use metal weapons. The engagement is more like a traditional battle, because this game is full of contact and uses weapons such as iron poles, axles, stop signs and metal chains to name a few.

Competitive Underground Jugger League or C.U.J.L. (Pronounced "mace") is a group originally derived from the American Midwest that began in 2009. In their league "weapons" made of rattan with a stretch surface lined with mountain bike tires. Helmets, knee protectors, and hand protection are the necessary tools as described in their Codex. Teams in the league compete every season for the "Bucket of Blood" trophy.

The Carolina Aggressive Jugger Association (C.A.J.A./CAJA) is another American jugger league that aims to hold more true to movies than its European counterparts. Formed in September 2010, they are still refining their rules and regulations. Drawing from C.U.J.L., the European league, as well as the film itself; they allow the use of a denser core, special hardwoods, (with metal allowed only in armament and shielding chains) and require only one layer of closed cell cushion at least 1/2 inch thick. This of course requires the application of armor covering vital areas; head, the majority of the ribs, forearm, shin, and the entire spine, may eventually have to be protected. Also their field is much smaller than most at 75Ã, ft by 40Ã, ft; this can also change. Smaller fields were chosen to compensate for additional fatigue caused by armor use and put players closer to each other, which CAJA felt more accurate than the usual playing field. Currently playing battles in Longs, South Carolina (just out of North Myrtle Beach) players age 14 and over are welcome to come watch or participate as a player or a support crew.

The USJL (United States Jugger League) is organized with the aim of building a team of Jugger who play the same rules as those found internationally so that the US will have the opportunity to take part in an international tournament. USJL rule books and other information can be found on the USJL website.

Jugger Ohio is a group formed in October 2010 based in the historic city of Marietta, Ohio. Using very similar rules, field size and equipment as its international partner, Jugger Ohio has also embraced social media as a good way of communicating. It continues to organize weekly and biweekly games through Facebook for great effects. They organized the first American Jugger tournament dubbed "The Dogskull Classic", which was planned in the German Open style. The event is scheduled for August 13, 2011 in Marietta Ohio.

The Red Dirt Jugger Club is based in Oklahoma City and was formed in June 2010. Oklahoma plays with German style rules, and has grown to more than 50 members. A league is being formed in the fall of 2012 and 7 teams of 6 have been set up and are preparing to play the league. Oklahoma City and its suburbs play every weekend.

Hits and strike zones

  • United States (Jugger Ohio & Jugger Club Red Dirt)
When a player is struck by another team enforcer, they take a knee and are inactive for a count of five stones .
When a player is hit by a ball or a connecting chain, they take the knee and are inactive for a count of eight stones.
Hits to hand, head and groin are not calculated as punches and crotch and head shots take eight stone penalties to the offending player. The other is a legal blow, including legs, shins, legs, and arms.

The Jugger variant is played in the Loroen Trust LARP system in the UK, a world championship held at the sporting event system, Great Edrejan Fayre.

Versions of the game are also sometimes played by SCA fighters
