"The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to Two Towers " is the thirteenth episode of the sixth season of the American animated television series South Park, and the entire 92nd episode of the series. It was originally aired on Comedy Central in the United States on November 13, 2002. In the episode, the children dressed up and played as characters from the The Lord of the Rings movie series, with several shows and characters being replaced into the narrative. They expanded their game into "search" to restore a copy of the movie to a local video store. Meanwhile, adults inadvertently changed the tape with pornographic films.

This episode was written by co-creator Trey Parker series. Both Parker and his co-creator, Matt Stone have repeatedly referred to it as one of the favorite and strongest episodes of South Park .

Plot

The episode opens with Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny without body (sharing Cartman's body) playing " The Lord of the Rings ." Stan's parents have rented the movie The Lord of the Rings (specifically, The Fellowship of the Ring), and told Stan, Kyle & amp; Cartman took him to Butters' parents, as they had asked to borrow him. Still trapped in their game, the children see this task as "searching", and start their journey. Stan's parents try to watch a porn movie, but find Randy mixing it up and Lord of the Rings record, and realize that Butters is now watching it at his home.

The two drives to Butters' house, and find the boys back home, having already submitted the tape. Stan's father plays in the boys' imagination and sends them on their biggest quest: taking the tape, for "holding the evil forces." Excitedly, the children vigorously obeyed and left for Butters' house. They arrived and took the tape, but not before finding that Butters, though unaware of his nature, had watched the movie and became obsessed with it, even wondering aloud, "What's going on there?" before the other boys arrive. Excluded from the game and denied video, Butters became increasingly insane, and remained isolated in the dungeon, mumbling about "precious" and generally acting like Sma  © agol/Gollum. At this point Marshes, increasingly concerned that the children had not returned, appeared. Confused at Butters' behavior, they assume that boys now have the tape and are watching it. Contacting other parents, they keep trying to find their missing children and "put them in context."

Upon returning home, the children ran to some 6th graders, who looked into the box and realized that the tape was actually a pornographic movie. Although they tried to take the tape, the boys were able to escape and decided to take him to the High Elven Council of Faragon (Clyde). On the council, where most of the fourth graders were present (in The Lord of the Rings except Kevin Stoley, who wore the masks of Star Wars), it was decided that in order to determine the power of the tape, they had to send one from them to watch it for a few minutes. Talonguard the Black (Token) is a volunteer, and a few steps inside his house for a moment. He immediately came out, expressionless and dressed in street clothes, and announced, without explanation, that he did not play anymore. Now completely convinced of the tape's power, the council decided the tape should be returned to the Two Towers video store in Conifer "where it came from", and formed the "Lord of the Rings" Communion, consisting of Stan, Kyle, Cartman (with Kenny), Craig, Jimmy, and an unnamed kindergartener.

The kids avoid running with 6th graders but their side loses Jimmy, Craig, and kindergartners. Butters, who had followed them, offered to guide the remaining party members to the shop in a covert attempt to get the tape back. Soon all the boys ended up at Two Towers, and with the 6th graders in hot pursuit they desperately tried to return the tape to the drop box. When Butters refused to let go, Kyle threw him and taped it into the drop box. Angry at the loss of their film, a 6th grader, who now acts as Ringwraith, threatens to hit the children, but runs away when the parents arrive. Parents then have long discussions with the boys who are astonished about sex, touching subjects like 69 and double penetration. Boys, who never really watch movies that their parents portray graphically, are speechless. The episode ends with a Butters view, gripping "precious" amongst the piles of other back cassettes in the drop box.

Production

The storyline of this episode is inspired by the events of Trey Parker's co-creator series. While at the author's meeting in producing the episode, he remembers a period when another boy from his neighborhood found a copy of his parents' VHS pornographic film. She remembers him and other people his age rushing to watch a movie, and becomes "confused" about what they see. Because she's too young to be raised by sexual intercourse on the screen, she finds her cute naivete and cultivates it into episodes. Audio for porn movies is the true audio of random video; its use in episodes that required Parker and Stone to find a distributor to get permission for it. At one point, the video of the film was used in the episode, but it was issued.

Reception

Trey Parker calls this episode one of his favorite episodes, because it follows a simple formula "boys become boys." Matt Stone also referred to it as a "classic" episode, commenting, "If we can make every episode of South Park this good, we'll be really psyched." This episode is included in the 2006 compilation DVD, South Park: The Hits . In his commentary, Trey Parker stated that this episode is "Just a perfect example, for us, about how fun it was when the kids were kids."
