Story

As the story goes, a few centuries ago among the many towns and villages of Ireland, there lived a drunk known as "Stingy Jack". Jack is known throughout the country as a fraud, manipulator, and otherwise community. On a crucial night, Satan hears the story of Jack's evil deeds and silver tongue. Unsure (and envy) about the rumor, the devil goes to find out for himself whether Jack lives up to his cruel reputation.

Typical of Jack, he is drunk and roams in the countryside at night when he finds corpses on a rocky road. The body with a frightening wince on his face turned out to be Satan. Jack was gloomy, this was the end of his life; Satan finally came to gather his evil soul. Jack makes a last request: he asks Satan to let him drink ale before he leaves for Hades. Finding no reason to disagree with the request, Satan takes Jack to the local pub and gives him plenty of alcohol. After satisfying his mind, Jack asks Satan to pay tabs on the ale, to surprise Satan. Jack convinces Satan to morpheme into a silver coin that can be used to pay the bartender (impressed by Jack's unforgiving evil tactics). Shrewdly, Jack installs a Devil (coin) that is now transmitted to his pocket, which also contains a cross. The presence of the cross restrained Satan from escaping from his form. This forces Satan to agree to Jack's request: instead of Satan's freedom, he has to save Jack's life for ten years.

Ten years later on the date when Jack initially reached his agreement, he found himself once again before the devil. Jack happens to Satan in the same setting as before and seems to be accepted it's time to go to Hades for good. When Satan prepares to take him to hell, Jack asks if he can have one apple to feed his starving stomach. Satan is stupid once again to approve this request. When Satan climbs an apple tree branch nearby, Jack surrounds his yard with a cross. Satan, frustrated at the fact that he has been trapped again, demanding his release. As Jack had done before, he filed a lawsuit: that his soul was never taken by Satan into Hades. Satan agrees and is set free.

Eventually the drink swallowed the victim of Jack and he died, the soul of Flaky Jack preparing to enter Paradise through the gates of St. Peter, but he's stopped. And Jack was told by God that because of his deceitful lifestyle of cheating and drinking he was not allowed into Heaven. Jack then goes to the Gate of Hell and begs the commission to the underworld. Satan, fulfilling his duty to Jack, can not take his soul. To warn others, he gave Jack the embers of fire, marking him the inhabitants of the hereafter. From that day to the end of eternity, Jack was destined to roam the world between good and evil fields, with only the embers in a pit ("turnips" which actually referred to a great rutabaga) to illuminate his path.

There are many different versions of this story.
