The Dark Knight is a 2008 super hero movie directed, produced and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Featuring the DC Comics Batman character, this film is the second part of Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy and the 2005 sequel Batman Begins, starring ensemble players including Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman. In the film, Bruce Wayne/Batman (Bale), Police Lieutenant James Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart) formed an alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City, but were threatened by a criminal mastermind known as Joker (Ledger) which seeks to undermine Batman's influence and create chaos.

Nolan's inspiration for the film was the debut of the Joker comic book in 1940, the 1988 graphic novel The Killing Joke, and the 1996 series The Long Halloween, which recounted the origins of Two- Face. The nickname "Dark Knight" was first applied to Batman in Batman # 1 (1940), in a story written by Bill Finger. The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago, as well as in other locations in the United States, Britain and Hong Kong. Nolan uses a 70 mm IMAX film camera to film several sequences, including the first appearance of Joker in the movie. Warner Bros. originally created a viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight , developed a promotional and trailer website that highlights the Ledger screenshot as Joker. Ledger died on January 22, 2008, a few months after the filming was completed and six months before the release of the film from a combination of toxic prescription drugs, leading to the strong attention of the press and public film-go.

A joint production of the United States and the United Kingdom, The Dark Knight was released on July 16, 2008, in Australia, on July 18, 2008, in North America, and on July 25, 2008, in the United Kingdom. The film critics think of it as one of the best movies of the 2000s and one of the best superhero movies ever; the film received very positive reviews, mainly for its action, scores, scenarios, performances (mainly Ledger), visual effects, and direction, and arranged many notes during theater run. The Dark Knight appeared on the top ten list of critics (287) than any other movie in 2008 with the exception of WALL-E , and more critics (77) named The Dark Knight is the best film released that year. With over $ 1 billion of revenue worldwide, it became the 2008 grossing film and is the 34th best-selling film of all time, unconfined with inflation (fourth at the time of release); it also set a record-high gross domestic opening with $ 158 million, a record it held for three years. The film received eight Academy Award nominations; won awards for Best Sound Editing and Ledger was posthumously awarded Best Supporting Actor. The Dark Knight Rises , the last film in the trilogy, was released on July 20, 2012.

Plot

A group of criminals robbed a Gotham City mass bank, killing each other until only the mastermind remains: Joker, who escaped with money.

Batman, District Attorney Harvey Dent and Lieutenant Jim Gordon formed an alliance to get rid of Gotham from organized crime. Bruce Wayne believes that, with Dent as protector of Gotham, he can retire from Batman and lead a normal life with Rachel Dawes - even though he and Dent are dating.

Mafia bosses, Sal Maroni, Gambol, and Chechen held a videoconference with their corrupt accountant, Lau, who had taken their funds for safekeeping and fled to Hong Kong. The Joker interrupts and warns them that Batman has no jurisdiction and is not hindered by law, offering to kill him in return for half of their money. After Gambol puts a gift on his head, Joker kills Gambol and takes over his gang. Massa finally decided to bring the Joker up on his offer.

Batman finds Lau in Hong Kong and takes him back to Gotham to testify, allowing Dent to capture the whole crowd. Joker threatens to continue killing people unless Batman reveals his identity, and starts by killing Police Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb and the judge presiding over the mass assembly. Joker also tried to kill Major Anthony Garcia, but Gordon sacrificed himself to stop the killing. Dent knows that Rachel is the next target.

Bruce decides to reveal his secret identity. Before he could, however, Dent wrongly announced that he was Batman. Dent is put in a protective custody, but the Joker appears and attacks the convoy. Batman came to the rescue of Dent and Gordon, who faked his death, arrested the Joker, secured promotion to the Commissioner. Rachel and Dent were escorted away by the detective on Maroni's payroll; Gordon later learned that they never got home. Batman interrogated the Joker, who revealed that they had been trapped in a separate location equipped with explosives. Batman races save Rachel, while Gordon tries to save Dent. Batman arrives at the building, but realizes that Joker sent him to the Dent location instead. Both buildings exploded, killing Rachel and staining half of Dent's face. The Joker escapes with Lau, who he later kills with Chechnya.

Coleman Reese, an accountant at Wayne Enterprises, concluded that Bruce was Batman and tried to announce information to the public. Not wanting Reese's revelations to interfere with his plans, Joker threatens to destroy the hospital unless someone kills Reese within an hour. Gordon ordered the evacuation of all hospitals in Gotham and went to secure Reese. Joker gave Dent a pistol and convinced him to take revenge for Rachel's death, then destroyed the hospital and escaped with a large number of hostages. Dent continues the assassination, deciding the fate of the people he holds is responsible for Rachel's death by flipping her lucky coin.

After announcing Gotham would be subject to his administration coming dusk, Joker rigs two evacuate the ferry with explosives; one containing civilians and other detainees containing. He said that he would blow them both up at midnight, but would let someone live if his passengers (who had been supplied trigger to other ship's explosives) blew up the others. Batman invented the Joker using a sonar device that spied the entire city, with the help of a reluctant Lucius Fox. Both civilians and prisoners refused to kill each other, while Batman captured the Joker after a brief fight. Before the police arrive to bring the Joker into custody, he boasts that the citizens of Gotham will lose hope once the Dent rages into common knowledge.

Monique Gabriela Curnen and Ron Dean portray Anna Ramirez and Michael Wuertz respectively, a corrupt detective in Gordon's unit. Nestor Carbonell appears as Anthony Garcia, Gotham's mayor. Ng Chin Han plays Lau, a corrupt Chinese LSI accountant at Wayne Enterprises and the Triad boss. Eric Roberts plays Sal Maroni, an Italian mafia boss who takes over Carmine Falcone's horde, and Ritchie Coster describes Chechen, a Chechen mafia boss who is in charge of drug trafficking for the masses. Anthony Michael Hall emerged as Mike Engel, a Gotham News Wire reporter, and Keith Szarabajka plays Gerard Stephens, a detective in Gordon's unit. Joshua Harto plays Coleman Reese, an accountant for M & amp; in Wayne Enterprises that summed up Bruce Batman's character from Fox and plans to reveal it to Gotham. Melinda McGraw appears as Barbara Gordon, Gordon's wife, while Nathan Gamble appears as James Gordon, Jr., the ten-year-old son of Gordon. Michael Jai White plays Gambol, a Nigerian mafia boss responsible for illegal gambling and extortion for the masses. Colin McFarlane repeated his role as Gillian B. Loeb, Gotham Police Commissioner.

Supporters of the film include Nydia Rodriguez Terracina as Judge Janet Surrillo, and Tom "Tiny" Lister, Jr. as a prisoner on one of the ferry-rigged bombs. William Fichtner plays Gotham National Bank manager, and Cillian Murphy is back in a cameo as Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow, who was captured early on in the movie by Batman.

Dwight Yoakam's musician was approached for a corrupt manager or police role, but he chose to focus on his album Dwight Sings Buck . United States Senator Patrick Leahy - Batman comic fan previously an addition to the 1997 film Batman & amp; Robin and also the guest voice actor in Batman: The Animated Series - appeared as a guest at Bruce Wayne's party. Matt Skiba, co-lead vocalist and guitarist of the bands Alkaline Trio and Blink-182, made a small appearance in the film. David Dastmalchian emerged as Thomas Schiff, a fake Honor Guard who interrupted Loeb's funeral and was then held at gunpoint by Dent.

Production

Development

Before the release of Batman Begins, screenwriter David S. Goyer wrote care for two sequels that introduced the Joker and Harvey Dent. His original intention was to Joker to scar Dent during the Joker experiment in the third movie, turning Dent into Two-Face. Goyer, who wrote the first drama of the film, quoted the comic series DC Comics 13-issue limited series Batman: The Long Halloween as the main influence on the storyline. According to veteran Batman artist Neal Adams, he met David Goyer in Los Angeles, and the story will eventually be seen in the story of Adams and writer Denny O'Neil in 1971 "The Five-Way Revenge Joker" which appears in Batman # 251, where O'Neil and Adams reintroduce the Joker. Though initially unsure whether he will return to direct the sequel, Nolan does want to interpret the Joker on screen. On July 31, 2006, Warner Bros. officially announced the production initiation for the sequel Batman Begins titled The Dark Knight ; this is the first live-action movie Batman without the word "Batman" in the title, which Bale noted as a sign that "this takes my Batman and Chris" is very different from the others. ".

After much research, Nolan's brother and co-author Jonathan suggested the first two Joker appearances, published in the first edition of Batman (1940), as an important influence. Christopher has Jonathan watching the crime movie 1933 Fritz Lang The Testament of Dr. Mabuse before writing Joker, with Joker resembling the characteristics of Mabuse. Christopher Nolan refers to Lang's film as "an important research for anyone trying to write supervillain". Jerry Robinson, one of the co-creators of the Joker, was consulted on character depictions. Nolan decided not to disclose the original deep story for the Joker, and instead of describing his appearance to power in order not to reduce the threat he posed, explained to MTV News, "The Joker we met at The Dark Knight <" I'm fully formed... To me, Joker is absolute. No shades of gray for him - maybe purple. She's unbelievably dark. He exploded as he did in the comics. "Nolan reiterated to IGN," We never wanted to do the origin story for the Joker in this movie ", because" the story arc is much more Harvey Dent; Joker is presented as absolute. This is a very thrilling element in the movie, and a very important element, but we want to deal with the revival of the Joker, not the Joker origin. "Nolan suggests Batman: The Killing Joke affects part of the Joker dialogue in the movie, where he says that anyone can be just like him remembering the right circumstances Nolan also calls Heat as "a kind of inspiration" for his purpose "to tell the story of a very large city or the story of a city": "If you want to face Gotham, you want to give Gotham some kind of weight and breadth and depth there. So you end up dealing with political figures, media figures. That's part of the whole fabric of how a city is tied together. "

According to Nolan, the important theme of the sequel is "escalation", extending the end of Batman Begins, noting "things must get worse before they get better". While showing The Dark Knight will continue the theme of Batman Begins , including justice vs. revenge and Bruce Wayne's problems with his father, Nolan stressed that his sequel will also portray Wayne more as a detective, his character aspect not fully developed in Batman Begins. Nolan described the friendly rivalry between Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent as the "backbone" of the film. He also chose to compress the whole storyline, allowing Dent to become Two-Face on The Dark Knight, thus giving the film an emotional bow that the unsympathetic Joker can not offer. Nolan acknowledged the title was not only a reference to Batman, but also Harvey Dent's "white knight" that fell.

Filming

While looking for shooting locations in October 2006, location manager Robin Higgs visited Liverpool, concentrating mainly along the edge of the city. Other candidates include Yorkshire, Glasgow, and parts of London. In August 2006, one of the film's producers, Charles Roven, stated that the main photography would begin in March 2007, but the shoot was pushed back to April. For a release at the IMAX theater, Nolan shot four major sequences in that format, including a Joker opening bank robbery and a car chase in the middle of the movie, which marked the first time that feature films had even been partly taken in the format. In addition, it was also the first Batman film to use 70 mm film. Cameras used for 35 mm non-IMAX scenes are Panaflex Millennium XL and Platinum from Panavision.

For fifteen years, Nolan wanted to take pictures in the IMAX format, and he also used them for "quiet scenes that we pictured would be interesting". The use of IMAX cameras presents many new challenges for filmmakers: cameras are much larger and heavier than standard cameras, and produce sounds that make recording dialogue difficult. In addition, the camera has a short film load ranging from 30 seconds to two minutes and the film stock cost is much larger than the standard 35 mm film. Nevertheless, Nolan said that he hoped it would be possible to record an entire movie on IMAX: "if you can take IMAX cameras to Mount Everest or outdoor space, you can use them in featured movies." In addition, Nolan chose to edit some IMAX sequences using native negative cameras, which by eliminating generation losses, lifted the film's resolution from that sequence to 18 thousand lines.

Warner Bros. chose to shoot in Chicago for 13 weeks, because Nolan had an "absolutely awesome" experience as part of the Batman Begins movie there. Instead of using the Chicago Board of Trade Building as the location for Wayne Enterprises headquarters, as Batman Begins did, The Dark Knight showed Wayne Enterprises as headquartered at Richard J. Daley Center. While filming in Chicago, the film was given the fake title of Rory's First Kiss to decrease visibility of production, but local media finally found its ruse. Richard Roeper of Chicago Sun-Times commented on the technical absurdity, "Is there a Bat-fan in the world who does not know Rory's First Kiss actually The Dark Knight >, who has been filming in Chicago for weeks? "The Dark Knight Production in Chicago generated $ 45 million in the city's economy and created thousands of jobs. For a film prologue involving Joker, the crew shot in Chicago from April 18, 2007 to April 24, 2007. They returned for filming from June 9, 2007, until early September. Visible, unlike Batman Begins , less CGI is used to disguise Chicago. Many recognizable locations are used in movies, such as Sears Tower, Navy Pier, 330 North Wabash, James R. Thompson Center, Trump International Hotel and Tower, LaSalle Street, The Berghoff, Randolph Street Station and Hotel 71. An old Brach Factory used as Gotham Hospital. The defunct Van Buren Street post office doubles as Gotham National Bank for bank opening robbery. Several sequences, including one car chase, were shot at a lower level than Wacker Drive. The Marina City Tower also appears in the background throughout the movie.

Pinewood Studios, near London, is the main studio space used for production. When planning an action with Batmobile at a special effects facility near Chertsey, England in September 2007, technician Conway Wickliffe was killed when his car crashed. The film is dedicated to Ledger and Wickliffe. The restaurant scene was filmed at Criterion Restaurant in Piccadilly Circus, London.

The following month in London at the dead Battersea Power Station, a 200-foot fireball filmed, was reported for an opening sequence, prompting calls from locals who feared a terrorist attack on the station. A similar incident occurred during filming in Chicago, when the abandoned Brach candy factory (which was Gotham Hospital in the film) was destroyed.

The filming took place in Hong Kong from November 6 to 11, 2007, at various locations in Central, including Hong Kong's tallest building at the time, the International Finance Center, for the scene where Batman captured Lau. Filming rides helicopters and C-130 planes. Officials expressed concern over possible noise and traffic pollution. In response, letters sent to city residents promised that sound levels would be close to decibels of sound made by the bus. Environmentalists also criticized the filmmakers' demand for groundwater skyscraper tenants to keep their lights on throughout the night to improve cinematography, describing it as a waste of energy. Cinematographer Wally Pfister found city officials as "nightmares", and finally Nolan had to create a Batman leap from a skyscraper digitally.

Design

Costume designer Lindy Hemming describes Joker's appearance as reflecting her personality, that "she does not care about her at all"; he avoids designing him as a bum, but still makes him look like "scruffier, grungier", so "when you see him move, he's a little more nervous or tense". Nolan noted, "We gave Francis Bacon a spin to [his face].This corruption, this decay in the texture of the look itself, it's dirty, you can almost imagine what it smells like." In creating the "anarchist" look of the Joker, Hemming was inspired by contemporary cultural pop culture artists such as Pete Doherty, Iggy Pop and Johnny Rotten. Ledger describes his "clown" mask, consisting of three pieces of patterned silicon, as "new technology", takes less than an hour for makeup artists to apply, much faster than normally required by conventional prosthetic. Ledger also said that he felt he barely wore make-up.

The design of Joker Hemming and Ledger has had an impact in popular culture and politics in the form of "Joker" Barack Obama poster, and has since become a meme in its own right.

Designers increased on the Batsuit design of Batman Begins, adding elastic elastic width to help tie the costumes to Bale, and suggested more advanced technology. It was built from 200 individual pieces of rubber, fiberglass, metallic mesh, and nylon. The new cowl is modeled after the motorcycle helmet and separated from the neck piece, allowing Bale to rotate his head left and right and nodding up and down. The cowl is equipped to show a white lens above the eye when the character changes on its sonar detection, which gives Batman a white-eyed view of comics and animations. The glove has a razor that can be fired. Although his new costume was eight pounds heavier, Bale felt more comfortable and not too hot to wear. The portrait of Gotham City is less clever than it is in Batman Begins . "I've tried to tidy up Gotham we made in the last movie", says production designer Nathan Crowley. "Gotham is in a mess, we keep blowing things up, so we can keep our pictures clean."

Effects

The film introduces Batpod, which is a recreation of Batcycle. Production designer Nathan Crowley, who designed the Tumbler for Batman Begins, designed six models (built by special effects inspector Chris Corbould) for use in film production, due to the necessary crash scenes and possible accidents. Crowley built a prototype in Nolan's garage, before six months of security testing was done. Batpod is driven with the shoulders rather than the hands, and the rider's arms are protected by arm-like shields. This motor has a 508-millimeter (20-inch) front and rear tire, and is made as if armed with hooks, cannons, and machine guns. The engine is located at the wheel hub, which is set 3 1 / 2 Ã, feet (1067 mm) apart on both sides of the tank. The rider is under the tank, which can move up and down to avoid the shots that Batman will face. Stuntman Jean-Pierre Goy doubled for Christian Bale during the equestrian race at The Dark Knight. Batpod is very unstable to drive, and Goy is the only stuntman who can manage the balance of the bike, even commenting that he should "barely learn to ride a motorcycle" to manage riding a Batpod. Bale did insist on firing on Batpod himself, but was banned by the team fearing his safety.

Nolan designed the Two-Face appearance in the film as one of the least annoying, explaining, "When we look at a less extreme version, they are too real and more terrifying. When you see movies like Pirates of the Caribbean - something like that, there's something about the fantastic and very detailed visual effects that I think are stronger and less repugnant. "Framestore created 120 computer-generated shots from the wounded Two-Face scar. Nolan felt using make-up would look unrealistic, as it adds to the face, unlike a real burn victim. Framestore admits they are rearranging the position of bones, muscles and joints to make the characters look more dramatic. For each shot, three 720 pixels HD cameras are mounted at different angles on the set to fully capture Aaron Eckhart's performance. Eckhart wore a marker on his face and a fake head cover, which acted as a lighting reference. Several shots from the cap were stored in the film. Framestore also integrates Bale and Eckhart shots into an exploding building where Dent is burned. It was difficult to simulate fire at Eckhart because it was inherently unrealistic only half of something burned.

Music

Batman Start composer Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard return to print the sequel. The composition begins before shooting, and during filming, Nolan receives the iPod with ten hours of recording. Their nine-minute suite for Joker, "Why So Serious?", Is based around two notes. Zimmer compared his style with Kraftwerk, a band from his native Germany, as well as bands like The Damned. When Ledger died, Zimmer felt like throwing and composing a new theme, but decided that he could not be sentimental and compromise with the "Ledger's performance" project. Howard composed the "elegant and beautiful" theme of Dent, which focuses on brass.

Marketing

In May 2007, 42 Entertainment started a viral marketing campaign using the movie "Why So Serious?" tagline with the launch of a website featuring Harvey Dent's fictional political campaign, under the title, "I Believe in Harvey Dent". The site aims to attract fans by asking them to try to get what they want to see and, on behalf of Warner Bros., 42 Entertainment also creates a "vandalal" version of I Believe in Harvey Dent, called "Saya believe in Harvey Dent as well ", where e-mail sent by fans slowly removes pixels, revealing the first official image of Joker; it was eventually replaced by many "Haha" and hidden messages that say "see you in December".

During the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con International, 42 Entertainment launched WhySoSerious.com, sending fans on the hunt to unlock teaser footage and new Joker photos. On October 31, 2007, the film website turned into another hunt with a hidden message, instructing fans to uncover clues in certain locations in major cities across the United States, and to take photographs of their invention. The clues were combined to reveal a new Joker photo and an audio clip of him from the movie that read, "And tonight, you will break the only rule." Finishing the hunt also led to another site called Rory's Death Kiss (referring to Rory's First Kiss's false title ), where fans can submit their own photos as Joker. Those who sent photos were sent copies of fictitious newspapers called The Gotham Times , whose electronic version led to the discovery of many other websites.

The Dark Knight ' opens the sequence, (indicates a bank attack by the Joker) and closes the montage of another scene from the movie, filtered with selected IMAX play of I Am Legend , released on 14 December 2007. A theatrical teaser was also released with non-IMAX footage I Am Legend , as well as on its official website. The sequence was released on the Blu-ray Disc edition of Batman Begins on July 8, 2008. Also on July 8, 2008, the studio released Batman: Gotham Knight , an instant-to- DVD, set between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and featuring six original stories directed by Bruce Timm, co-creator and producer Batman: The Animated Series >, and starring longtime vocalist Batman, Kevin Conroy. Each of these segments, written by Josh Olson, David S. Goyer, Brian Azzarello, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg, and Alan Burnett, present their own artistic style, aligning many artists collaborating on the same DC Universe.

After the death of Heath Ledger on January 22, 2008, Warner Bros. adjusting his promotional focus on the Joker, revising some of his websites dedicated to promoting the movie and posting a monumental tribute to Ledger on the film's official website and overlaying the black warning. ribbon on the photo collage at WhySoSerious.com . On February 29, 2008, I Believe in Harvey Dent was updated to allow fans to send their e-mail addresses and phone numbers. In March 2008, Harvey Dent's fictional campaign told fans that the actual campaign bus dubbed "Dentmobiles" will tour cities to promote Dent candidacy for district prosecutors.

On May 15, 2008, Six Flags Great America and Six Flags Great Adventure amusement parks opened the Dark Knight Coaster's roller coaster, which spent $ 7.5 million to expand and simulate that they were being followed by the Joker. Mattel produces toys and games for The Dark Knight, action figures, role playing costumes, board games, puzzles, and special edition UNO card games, which began commercial distribution in June 2008.

Warner Bros. spent six months on an anti-violation strategy that involved tracking people who had pre-release copies of the movie at one time. Delivery and delivery schedules are also staggered and spot checks are conducted both domestically and abroad to ensure illegal copying of the movie does not occur in theaters. Unlicensed copies were released on the web about 38 hours after the release of the movie. BitTorrent search engine The Pirate Bay taunts the movie industry over its ability to provide free movies, replace logos with mock messages.

Reception

On the Rotten Tomatoes review website suite, The Dark Knight has a 94% approval rating, based on 327 reviews, with an average score of 8.6/10. The site's important consensus reads, "Dark, intricate and unforgettable , The Dark Knight succeeds not only as an entertaining comic book, but as a very thrilling crime story. " Metacritic, who delivers a normalized ranking based on reviews of major mainstream critics, calculated an average score of 82 out of 100, based on 39 critics, showing "universal recognition". The CinemaScore poll reported that the average class cinema player gave the movie "A" on a scale A to F, and that the audience tilted slightly men and older.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave four of the four stars, describing The Dark Knight as "a haunted movie that jumps beyond its origins and becomes an exciting tragedy". He praised the show, direction, and writing, saying the movie "redefined the possibilities of comic movies". Ebert stated that his "main performance" was by Heath Ledger, and contemplated whether he would become the first Academy Award-winning actor after Peter Finch in 1976. (Oscar awarded to Ledger the end.) Ebert put this as one of his twenty favorite films of the year 2008.

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote that the film is deeper than his predecessor, with a "nimble" script that refuses to research the Joker with popular psychology, instead of drawing audiences with Bruce Wayne's soul checks.. Travers praises all players, saying each carries his "A game" into the movie. He says Bale is "electrifying," awakening Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II, that Eckhart's portrayal of Harvey Dent is "scined moving", and that Oldman "is so skilled that he makes such attractive virtues as Jim Gordon ". Travers said Ledger moved the Joker away from Jack Nicholson's interpretation into darker areas, and expressed his support for any potential campaign for Ledger to be nominated for an Academy Award, Travers said that filmmakers move the film from comic cinema and more closely into original artwork, citing leads Nolan and the "intelligent realities" of Wally Pfister's cinematography as helping create a universe that has something "raw and crude" in the workplace within it. In particular, he cites the action choreography of Nolan in the sequence of IMAX thefts that is adjusted as rivaled from Heat (1995). Manohla Dargis of The New York Times wrote, "Referring to the distinction between art and industry, poetry and entertainment, it becomes darker and deeper than any Hollywood movie of its comic book type." Entertainment Weekly puts it on the end of the decade, the "best-of" list, says, "Every great hero needs a great villain, and in 2008, Christian Bale's Batman found him in Heath.Crazy dervish Ledger, the Joker. "BBC critic Mark Kermode, in a positive review, said that Ledger is" very, very good "but the Oldman is" the best performer in the movie, as far as a mile "; Kermode feels Oldman deserves an Oscar nomination.

Emanuel Levy writes Ledger "throws himself completely" into the role, and that the film represents Nolan's "most successful and mature" work, and the most technically and resonant of all Batman movies. Levy calls this series of acts the most memorable ever seen in American films over the years, and the conversation about Hong Kong's portion of the film is visually impressive. Levy and Peter Travers concluded that the film is "haunting and visionary", while Levy goes on to say that The Dark Knight is "nothing short of brilliant". On the other hand, David Denby from The New Yorker says that the story is not coherent enough to properly perfect the gap. He said the mood of the film was one of the "constant climax", and it felt rushed and too long. Denby criticized scenes that he thought were meaningless or short-cut as soon as they became interesting. Denby states that the central conflict can be carried out, but "only half the team can act", saying that Bruce Wayne's "calm" and "dogged but uninteresting" Batman continues to be defeated by Ledger's "creepy and scary" performance, which he says is one the movie element of success. Denby concludes that Ledger is "dazzling" in every scene. The vocalizations of Batman Christian Bale (which were partially modified during post-production) were the subject of some criticism by some commentators, with David Edelstein of NPR describing Bale giving his appearance with "deeper voice and more hammes than ever". Alonso Duralde at MSNBC, however, refers to Bale's voice in "The Dark Knight" as "a spooky sound", as opposed to the sound used in Batman Begins, which according to Duralde sounds very deep, like a 10-year-old put an adult voice for prank calling. "

Mystery writer Andrew Klavan, writing in The Wall Street Journal, compared Batman's extreme actions to fight crime with US President George W. Bush used in the War on Terror. Klavan claims that, "to some degree" The Dark Knight is "a compliment to the fortitude and moral courage that George W. Bush has shown in this period of terror and war." Klavan advocates reading this film by comparing Batman - like Bush, Klavan argues - "sometimes have to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with emergencies, confident that he will rebuild those boundaries when an emergency has passed". The Klavan article has received criticism on the Internet and in mainstream media, as in The New Republic ' s "The Plank". Reviewing the movie at The Sunday Times, Cosmo Landesman reached the opposite conclusion to Klavan, arguing that The Dark Knight offers many moralistic discourses on how we should embrace terrorists, okay, I am exaggerating, in essence, however, a lengthy and tedious discussion of how individuals and societies should not abandon the rule of law in the struggle against the power of lawlessness In fighting monsters, we must be careful not to become monsters - that sort of thing. The film won an anti-war coalition claim that, in the war on terror, you create conditions for more terror. We are shown that innocent people die of Batman - and he falls in love with him. "Benjamin Kerstein, writing in > Azure , saying that both Klavan and Landesman "have a point", because "The Dark Knight" is the perfect mirror of the people who watch it: a society divided into issues of terror and how to fight it, for the first time in decades, the mainstream of America is no more. "

Former US president Barack Obama has used the film to help explain how he understood the role and growth of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). "There's a scene at the beginning where the Gotham gang leaders meet... These are the people who have the city divided. They are thugs, but there is such a command. All people have the grass. And then Joker comes and lights the whole city with fire. ISIS is a Joker, it has the capacity to burn the whole territory. That's why we have to fight it. "

Theme and analysis

According to David S. Goyer, the main theme of The Dark Knight is escalation. Gotham City is weak and citizens blame Batman for city violence and corruption as well as Joker threats, and that pushes the limit, making him feel that taking the law into his own hands is increasingly degrading to the city. Roger Ebert noted, "Throughout the film, [Joker] designs a clever situation that forces Batman, Commissioner Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent to make impossible ethical decisions." Ultimately, all the moral foundations of the Batman legend are threatened.

Other critics have mentioned the theme of the victory of evil for good. Harvey Dent was seen as Gotham's "White Knight" at the beginning of the film but eventually became tempted for crime. The Joker, on the other hand, is seen as a representation of anarchy and chaos. He has no motive, no command, and no desire but to cause catastrophe and "watch the world burn". Horrible human error logic is another theme as well. The ferry boat scene shows how humans can easily be attracted by the wrath, and how it can cause catastrophic potential.

The inclusion of characters such as Joker, people who refuse to play with the traditional rules of criminals, has led some critics and experts to identify the Dark Knight's violent as a clear allegory for the use of force in response to the global threat in America post 9/11. For example, in a controversial article for Wall Street Journal Andrew Klavan argues that The Dark Knight is a praise of the moral fortitude and courage that George W. Bush has shown today terror and war.Such as... W. sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with emergencies, convinced that he will rebuild those boundaries when an emergency occurs and then "
