History

Initial years

The first airport in Pyongyang is located east of the Taedong River. However, after World War II there was a need for a new airport, and Sunan Airfield was built.

During the Korean War, the airport was occupied by United Nations forces for seven weeks in the late 1950s. The troops flew large quantities of supplies to Sunan during this period. On May 13, 1953, the airport was flooded when the US Air Force bombed the Toksan Dam. After the ceasefire was signed two months later, the North Korean government began to repair and expand the airport.

Development since the 2000s

In 2000, Aeroflot stopped its flight from Moscow and then stopped its service from Khabarovsk. Russian Sky Airlines operates charter services to Pyongyang from Russian destinations during the mid-2000s operated by Il-62M aircraft and Il-86 China Southern Airlines offers scheduled charter flights to and from Beijing during peak seasons only, and permanently withdraws flights in October 2006 In March 2008, Air China re-established services to Beijing with Boeing 737, three days a week, and suspended due to lack of demand on November 22, 2017. Air Koryo, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines also provide chartered flight services to Seoul and Yangyang on the coast east of South Korea from Pyongyang. This flight is used by members of Korean families visiting families divided across borders; the service was discontinued after the end of South Korea's Sunshine Policy in 2008.

Modernization

In early 2011, a temporary facility handling international flights was built just south of the existing terminal. In early 2012, the demolition of the existing terminal, which Kim Jong-un considered too small and out of date, has begun. In July 2012, he ordered the construction of a new terminal. In addition, new control towers and VIP terminals in the north of the main terminal were also built. The project is part of a "speed campaign", in which thousands of workers are required to complete it immediately. Most of the construction is done by hand or with simple equipment.

Missile test September 2017

On September 15 at around 6:30 am, North Korea fired Hwasong-12 missiles from the airport. The missile covers 3,700 kilometers (2,300 mi) and reaches a maximum altitude of 770 kilometers (480 mi).
