The second season Pretty Little Liars , based on a book by the same name by Sara Shepard, aired on June 14, 2011 and ends on March 19, 2012 about the ABC Family. On January 10, 2011, ABC Family updated the series for the second season. The premier season brings 3.68 million viewers, which is higher than the 1 st season premiere. Halloween special that aired on October 19, 2011, attracted 2.5 million total viewers. The second half of season 2 airs on January 2, 2012.

Picking up the night Ian Thomas's body disappeared, Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily painted as liars by news and police. The women's parents asked them to see a therapist, Dr. Anne Sullivan. Initially they refused, and after a tense therapy session, their parents asked that the girls end their friendship with each other. This creates a lot of tension, because the girls are forced to meet in secret. Spencer reveals that Ian may still be alive, suspecting Melissa of hiding it somewhere. With the help of Melissa's fiancee, Wren, the girls followed them to an old silo, where Ian's body was found, along with a suicide note. Emily then realizes that the note consists of various messages from "-A" and that "-A" planted a note to make them think Ian had killed Alison. Armed with this revelation, the girls begin to investigate other potential suspects, such as Alison's older brother, Jason, who has moved back to town, as well as Jenna Marshall. They then sever ties with Garrett Reynolds after learning of his romantic relationship with Jenna, whom Ali inadvertently blinds in a wrong joke.
The girls confessed to Dr. Sullivan that they were tortured by "-A", allowing Dr. Sullivan to collect the blackmailer's identity. However, before Dr. Sullivan can tell the girls about who "-A" is, he's gone. "-A" forced the girls to perform various tasks throughout Hanna's father's wedding day, such as forcing Aria to blackmail Ezra's former fiancée with plagiarized college paper and sabotaging Hanna's father's marriage. Spencer was also forced to end his relationship with Toby Cavanaugh to keep him safe from the "-A" wrath.
Emily was carried over to an old warehouse, where she was trapped by "-A" who tried to kill her using carbon monoxide poisoning. However, someone rescued her, and Emily had Alison's vision. The girls arrive and "-A" instruct them to dig Dr. Sullivan before he runs out of oxygen. However, "-A" has framed them, and they are then captured with a shovel Alison has been killed. Spencer's mother was able to free them from prison and they were forced to undergo community service.
Aria also reveals her relationship with Ezra to her parents before "-A" can, which ends negatively. Aria's father made many threats against her, before causing her to lose her job at Hollis College. Although they broke up for a while, Aria and Ezra began to meet secretly with the help of her childhood friend, Holden Strauss. Unbeknownst to his overprotective parents, Holden participates in regular combat competitions, despite having a severe heart condition.
The girls then try to fool "-A" by making them think they have something that can give their identity; Emily is confronted by "-A" in a nursery abandoned plan. When Emily reveals the girls have tricked them, "-A" physically attacked her, but Aria and Spencer came and cornered them. They threw a vase into the air, smashed the glass ceiling and gave them enough time to escape; However, Hanna arrived and hit "-A" in her car, dropping it for a while. The girls chased them into the forest, but lost them. They go back to the nursery, where they find the "-A" phone. The girls asked Caleb's help in unlocking the phone, when Hanna and Caleb returned together for the second half of the season.
Finally, Alison connects to an old doll hospital in a nearby town called Brookhaven, and then a rural motel, The Lost Woods Resort. The girls attend a mask party, where they plan to face the "-A" which apparently a lady dressed up like The Black Swan of Swan Lake. Spencer, accompanied by Mona, drove to Lost Woods, while the other girls chased "-A". Spencer and Mona were able to steal a key into one of the rooms, which was revealed to be "-A's" Lair. Mona then reveals to Spencer that she is "-A", while the woman at the costume party is just a bait. Mona hit Spencer unconscious, taking her to the nearest cliff. He gave Spencer the option of joining his "-A" team, or dying.
Spencer briefly fled, and the other girls learned about Mona's plans and rushed to help her. Spencer and Mona fought, and Mona was knocked down into a cliff, but persisted. Emily learns that Maya is murdered, after she seems to disappear. Mona is hospitalized at Radley Sanitarium, where she is visited by a blond woman in a red trench coat, revealing that Mona works for others all the time.

Development and production
After an initial 24 episode sequence, it was announced in June that a special Halloween-themed flashback episode will be aired as part of the ABC Family 13 Nights of Halloween line, carrying episodes 2 episodes of season to 25 episodes.
On December 13, 2011, it was announced that A's identity would be revealed in the Spring Finale. Plus, the end of the season will see someone arrested for Alison's murder, as well as the death of a loved character - excluding four female cast members. The making of the second season film was wrapped on December 16, 2011.
Casting
Janel Parrish, Tammin Sursok, Bianca Lawson, and Tyler Blackburn returned in the second season as Mona Vanderwaal, Jenna Marshall, Maya St. Germain, and Caleb River. Also back are Yani Gellman, Torrey DeVitto, Lindsey Shaw, Claire Holt, Keegan Allen, Brant Daugherty, Brendan Robinson, and Julian Morris, who will all be repeating their roles from the first season. Annabeth Gish appears as Anne Sullivan, a therapist whose parents feel can help them in their problems. Andrea Parker will portray Jessica DiLaurentis, Alison's mother, who returns to Rosewood to help a fashion show held in honor of Alison. Actor Drew Van Acker also joins the player who plays Jason DiLaurentis, replacing Parker Bagley.
