Character

Monster High features a variety of fictitious characters, many of them students in high school titular. Female characters are classified as Ghoul and male characters are classified as Mansters. The characters are generally sons and daughters, or related to monsters that have been popularized in fiction. The franchise's official website identifies six characters as Original Ghouls:

  • Frankie Stein (voiced by Kate Higgins in 2010-16, Cassandra Morris in 2016-present) is the daughter of the Frankenstein monster and her bride. She has white hair with black stripes, though her mother has black hair with white stripes, and bright skin, mint-green, mint ice cream. Frankie is a simulacrum, which means his body is made of many different parts, similar to a hybrid, but he is more than three or four monsters. Also, she is awkward, sweet, and always nice to others. He has a new crush on Neighthan Rot. In this series, he is used to dating Jackson Jekyll and Holt Hyde but this is different in the diary where both characters have a relationship with Draculara instead.
  • Clawdeen Wolf (voiced by Salli Saffioti) is the daughter of the Werewolf. She is described as fluffy, friendly, and sweet. Clawdeen is little, or more than a little, a fashionista, because he loves fashion with clothing and clothing designs. He has a little anger at times when confused, but can easily control it when properly persuaded. His wolf's ear was pierced in many places.
  • Cleo de Nile (voiced by Salli Saffioti) is the daughter of Mummy Ramses de Nile and aged 5842 years at the beginning of the series. He is a scary squad captain. Cleo prefers to use accessories with gold-colored bandages or mummy wrappers. He, or by Cleopatra. She is also the queen of social scene and has a boyfriend named Deuce Gorgon.
  • Draculaura (voiced by Debi Derryberry) is a vampire who is the daughter of Count Dracula. He's in a relationship with Clawdeen's sister Clawd Wolf. He was a fainting vegan when he saw blood. The diary shows he used to date with Jackson Jekyll and Holt Hyde. He has fangs and usually dresses in pink, black and white.
  • Ghoulia Yelps (vocal effect provided by Audu Paden) is the daughter of a zombie who is Cleo de Nile's personal assistant. He is very clever, but can only speak zombie language consisting of moans and groans. She wears red glasses. Ghoulia is not present from reboot 2016.

Conception and development

The initial character was created by Garrett Sander and his twin brother, Darren. In researching the look, Sander's brothers went shopping with the girls and recorded them buying goth fashion items such as skulls, chains, and black. They say that because their character is a monster, they have more freedom to do things that ordinary kids can not do. Other inspirations include children's interest in Tim Burton and Lady Gaga. Kiyomi Haverly, Mattel's vice president of design, said, "To be honest, it was very surprising to us, we just saw girls becoming a darker goth mode." The dolls were made by Garrett Sander and illustrated by Kellee Riley.

Production

The main Monster High product is a playscale fashion doll, about 10.5 inches (27 cm) tall. More than 700 have been produced. Their bodies are made of ABS plastic and their heads are made of soft PVC. Dolls have many skin colors, including blue, green, orange and pink, in addition to the color of human skin. Each character has a unique head print, except for C. A. Cupid (Princess Eros), Ghoulia (Princess Zombies), and Meowlody/Purrsephone (Werecat twins). All female dolls have roots or hair, but male dolls may be in droves or hard, colored plastic hair. Each doll has its own style and fashion personality and each has its associated monster attributes (ie, fangs, stitches, wolf ears, fins, bandages, snakes, etc.). While they are mainly marketed in children, collector's edition dolls have also been produced. They are also very popular with 'OOAK' doll artists (one of a kind) - artists who paint and modify commercially available dolls. In 2016, the doll series 'reboot' with a sweeter face than the 'fierce' look of the original. They also changed their slogan from "Be Yourself, Be Unique, Be a Monster" to "How Do You Boo?"

Other High Monster products include vinyl figurines, plushies, costumes, and Mega Bloks toys.
