Brooke Rolleston , (formerly Freeman ) is a fictitious character from New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street, starring Beth Allen. Brooke debuted on screen during the episode airing on July 14, 2008. The role was written with Allen in mind to play it. Brooke arrived as GP locum but then advanced in his career. She is played as a manipulative woman, who uses her sexuality to advance in her career. He is also characterized by his complex backstory that has produced his "chaotic" persona. As a stylish woman, Allen is required to spend longer in the dressing room with make-up artists. Brooke's style has been attributed to Katharine Hepburn, though she wore dark colors to convey her personality.

Brooke is described as a "doctor hunt" because it has a lot to do with co-workers. Two of his famous relationships include a failed love story with Ethan Pierce (Owen Black) - who almost guided him to commit suicide. Others with the Samuels Kindergarten (Benjamin Mitchell), who reveals his vulnerable side. With this stylist Nicola Newman getting dressed Brooke is a brighter color to convey change. Other storylines include overcoming his alcoholic mother and making serious medical mistakes. Brooke has been received positively by critics, supporting his deceitful nature and calling him the serial token "prostitute". Allen has been nominated for "New Person Choice Award" at the 2010 Qantas Television Awards.

Character development

Characterization

Brooke was created with actress Beth Allen in mind to play it. When she auditioned for the role, Allen did not anticipate that Brooke would be a "vixen" like that. He always wanted to work on Shortland Street and also discovered the complexity of Brooke as an interesting factor when taking on the role. Career wise, Brooke likes to create the impression that she is a competent, confident and ambitious woman. TVNZ describes it as "the study of fire and ice." Because he is ambitious, he finds general practice as a task rather than his job. He is also described often struggling to maintain his "professional façade" through public works. Brooke's personality is characterized by his double-faced and duplicity and he manipulates his way through situations. Allen says Brooke uses her sexuality to get what she wants. Allen tries to understand Brooke for his elaborate backstory, but admits that when he watches it on the screen, Brooke appears to be a bad person. Allen explains that Brooke is "very messy" because of the things in her background that she left behind. He also said Brooke was involved in "the wrong situation or had a friend who did not serve what he really wanted." Allen has praised Brooke for having more "depth" to her than her previous role. He added, "He has enough depth that he has room to move as a character."

Brooke styled as a fashionable woman. The style was originally based on the classy image of Katharine Hepburn. She is often played with makeup and straight hair. Allen revealed it took more than an hour each day for the make up department to create Brooke's look. Because Allen's curly hair is hard to treat, he has to undergo chemical treatment to straighten it. It is also used to maintain continuity with Brooke's appearance. Described as "ultra-fashion-conscious", Brooke usually wears tight silk blouses, high-waisted skirts, and high heels. The skirt has made full movement for Allen difficult. A "classic Brooke look" is a black dress worn, worn with a belt and gold jewelry and heels. Brooke's color scheme consists of very dark tones like black, gray and gold. Nicola Newman's serial Stylist reveals that when Brooke shows her "vulnerable side", she applies lighter colors to convey change.

Development of storyline

When Brooke first arrives she tries to romance Chris Warner (Michael Galvin). Allen thought it was "funny" that he had to chase "love doctors" around. One of Brooke's first relationships was with Ethan Pierce (Owen Black). Black told The Sunday Star-Times that he has a good working relationship with Allen, who helped them successfully perform many "big-time" scenes. When Black was written out of the series, his character Ethan was forced to flee. Brooke begs to run away with her, but Ethan prevents her from going with him. Black says that Brooke is always "the one" for Ethan. He concludes that Ethan just wants to protect him as "he saw a wolf approaching him and he just came out." After Ethan is killed, Brooke finds out she does not know her true self. Brooke felt desperate and deliberately walked on a street full of heavy traffic. Allen said he sympathized with the way Brooke felt because the situation was easy to connect. He added that because Brooke trusted Ethan and he let him down, he was left "questioning his whole view of the world." Brooke makes enemies in Ethan's girlfriend, Alice Piper (Toni Potter) and they then fight with the cat. The scene is described as "impromptu and embarrassing for both girls." Allen and Potter love to shoot scenes involving lots of hair-pulling and slapping. Brooke then began a relationship with the kindergarten Samuels (Benjamin Mitchell). Brooke plays the weak side to beg for the kindergarten morality. Allen reveals that Brooke is not "keeping all that grounded about the relationship" and he's that he's becoming unsure about his position as his girlfriend. He added that there is an element of "madness" in the storyline. Brooke "proved to be in need" for kindergarten, so she ended their romance.

In one storyline, Brooke becomes too focused to run a Primary Care Clinic, that she puts the patient's life in another risky place. Allen said "Brooke's care and precision standards have been slipping." The scene was played when he wrongly prescribed Barry Knox (Richard Green) with the wrong drug, he developed the serotonin syndrome. Sarah Potts (Amanda Billing) confronts Brooke for her negligence and she realizes that she has to cover her tracks. Allen explains that Brooke is "shocked and embarrassed" to realize that she made a medical mistake. Brooke cared about the patient, but she paid more attention to her career. Added that Brooke knew she had to keep quiet and do "damage control". However Barry is not satisfied with his treatment and acts unpredictable. Brooke "understands the magnitude of her error" after seeing her behavior and telling the truth. Allen is an ambassador for a gynecological cancer charity. He convinces a producer to explore the disease through his character. The plot is played when Brooke discovers she has an ovarian cyst. Allen says he likes to think it "makes a difference" because it is a disease "that no one talks about." Brooke was then forced to overcome the arrival of her alcoholic mother, Annette, with Louise Wallace playing a role in the role. The producer later introduced Winston Youn (Min Kim) as his "dedicated and meticulous" research assistant. When Kim auditioned for the role, the producer "was fascinated by the portrayal of his character's perverted admiration for Brooke." In October, Brooke and the opposite pole Vinnie Kruse (Pua Magasiva) developed a relationship. It was announced in November 2011 that a new addition to the Brooke family will arrive. In December, actress Rachel Blampied came to the soap as Brooke's illegitimate stepson, Bree. Blampied enjoys acting alongside Allen and Magasiva who state; "I have some great scenes with Beth and Pua, which are great fun because they are generous actors and have lots of fun to accompany!"

Reception

For his role, Allen was nominated in the category of "New People's Choice Award" at the 2010 Qantas Television Award, but did not win. Sarah Lang of the New Zealand Herald says Brooke is the latest "vixen" that has put the "pin for good use". He branded it "doctor seeker, mysterious, eye-catching" because he objected to Chris and Kip. He sums it up by describing it as "a mass of fascinating contradictions, firm but vulnerable, kind but manipulative, gregarious but aloof - so while we're not too warm to him, we do not hate him either." Herald Lang's colleague Zoe Walker says Brooke is a token token prostitute with a desire for "customized jacket, pencil skirt and dangling neckline." Meanwhile, Nicola Russell of the Sunday News also mentioned Brooke as a serial "resident bitch". The Sunday Star-Times says "the appearance of the angel Brooke conceals a cruel personality that he will not hesitate to lie out of a difficult situation." They also say "wherever he goes, men follow, like cheap perfume wafts." They finally gave him a score of seven out of ten in their "Bad Girl" feature. Many Allen stars that include Brooke as the best villain of soap, noted the character's ability to manipulate while also empathizing with the audience.
