Review: The Pools at Shades of Green Resort
src: yourfirstvisit.net

Shades of Green is a resort owned by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) in the city of Bay Lake, Florida, near Orlando, Florida on the Walt Disney World property. It is one of the five resorts of the Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) and part of the Morals, Welfare and Military Recreation (MWR) program. The resort, which expanded between 2004-2006, stands alone and operates from unsuitable funds and all profits are reinserted into the resort.

Detail resor

Shades of Green is located near Magic Kingdom, southwest of Polynesian Village Resort. This resort is not, however, on the monorail circle serving the Kingdom of Magic and Epcot. Transportation around Walt Disney World is provided exclusively by a separate bus fleet that takes guests to and from the Ticket and Transportation Center, Disney Animal Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Disney Springs, and water parks.

Shades of Green does not have a pervasive theme like other Disney resorts, and the general decor is from a modern state club. Rooftop displays and curved stone arches are on display giving the resort an American Craftsman feel. The main staircase surrounds a two-level rock formation with a waterfall flowing through it. The resort is located in a forest area complete with waterfalls and tropical gardens. The resort has 586 guest rooms, most of which are standard guest rooms with floor space of more than 480 square feet (45 m 2 ).

The standard rooms offered at Shades of Green are larger than standard rooms at Walt Disney World Resort. The resort also has 11 suites that can accommodate up to eight people. The resort has two lighted tennis courts, two heated swimming pools, a children's pool, hot tub, fitness center, arcade and laundry facilities.

There are also over 7,500 square feet (700 m 2 ) banquet hall with audio-visual equipment and staff to hold events. Since the resort is owned and operated by the US Military, merchandise sold inside the resort is exempt from sales tax, and rooms are exempt from hotel taxes. The rental requires the resort to meet the Disney standards.

The resort is designed to provide a vacation spot for US service members and their families. This is a retreat for military personnel of all ranks, their families and their guests. The resort offers discounted rates for hotel rooms and discounted amusement park tickets. The resort motto is Serving Those Who Serve . Specific eligibility must be met before making a reservation. When guests enter the Shades of Green, there are five service flags framing large rock formations with five waterfalls, each a tribute to five branches of military service. Riding above the setting is a larger American flag and a smaller POW/MIA flag.

History

Shades of Green was originally opened as a Disney-owned resort known as the Golf Resort in December 1973 with 151 rooms. The Golf Resort is set amid Palm and Magnolia golf courses. The resort is built of wood and volcanic rock in the country club style. The core building of the resort opened in 1971 as a two-story club for golf courses and did not really have guest rooms. The guest wing was added to the original club in 1973 due to the need for overnight accommodation. Each guest room in the resort feels like a suite with at least 480 square feet (45 m 2 ).

The hotel's full-service Pro offers a learning program called "Studio Golf", conducted by professionals for players of all ages and play levels. The resort provides a quiet atmosphere with pleasant views from the guest rooms. The Golf Resort is known for its Magnolia Room restaurant with its distinctive dessert, French Fried Ice Cream. The Magnolia Room, then the Trophy Room, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a large open space, complete with high ceilings with live entertainment.

Entertainment is usually provided by a guitar that plays and sings a duo called Amos and Charles. Their performances are a combination of rock, bluegrass, country music and folk music. The Players Lounge is a large, windowless lounge overlooking Magnolia Golf Course. Recreation at the resort includes two lighted tennis courts and a swimming pool, now the Magnolia Pool, which has three columns of water spraying in the shallow pool. There are also two green putts at the resort.

The resort has only 60% to 75% occupancy rate throughout the year, while Disney's Polynesian Resort and Disney's Contemporary Resort have nearly 100% occupancy. One of the main problems with the resort is its location. The resort exits the monorail circle, almost 0.25 miles (0.40 km) from the nearest monorail station at The Polynesia.

Most travel agents and tourists do not really consider The Golf Resort to actually be a "Disney" resort. The resort was expanded and renamed to The Disney Inn in February 1986 to try to attract more golfers. It received an additional 150 rooms with a new Snow White theme during the renovation. The resort is still small though for Disney standards. The resort describes itself as having the charm of a quiet country countryside countryside. Rooms are decorated in bright and airy style. The sitting area has pale green paint, oak tables and chairs, along with chandeliers and pull couches.

The bedroom is painted in light brown and has oak hanger and oak headboard. The bed has a flower blanket and there is a small reading chair in the corner. Dining options include "The Garden Gallery", which is still operating, with a bright and airy atmosphere, providing a great place for casual dining and offering American cuisine. "The Back Porch" is a lounge in the resort.

A snack bar called "The Diamond Mine" and "Sand Trap", a poolside bar, are two other dining options. The recreation includes a diamond mine arcade, swimming in two swimming pools, jogging, playing tennis on one of two fields, and playing golf on one of two challenging championship courses beside the resort. Prices from the early 1990s to Disney Inn ranged from $ 195.00 a night for two queen beds and a sleeper sofa up to $ 500.00 for a suite.

In the early 1990s, Army officials had decided it was time to build a resort in the continent of the United States. Orlando is the top choice in the market survey of soldiers. On February 1, 1994, the US Department of Defense rented rented land and land for 100 years to use for the MWR program and limited the resort to qualified guests. In 1996, the resort was purchased directly, for $ 43 million, due to the high success of the resort, although Disney still owns the land where the resort is located.

The resort was renamed Shades of Green. Since its opening, it has run at or near 100% capacity. The name of the resort refers to different uniform colors. While all services have different Class A Uniforms, all war-fighter uniforms are green. The resort previously has a small cafe located near the lobby called Cafe Belle and a lounge called Rear Porch. The resort was temporarily closed on 1 April 2002 to allow the demolition of the original building and begin construction of the new building. The resort's renovation took nearly two years to complete and finally reopened to the public on March 31, 2004. This huge expansion from 2002 to 2004 gave the resort a capacity of 586 guest rooms. KBJ Architects is the ultimate architect of the resort's expansion.

During the renovation period, guests can stay at Disney's Contemporary Resort at Shades of Green daily. The purpose of the renovation is to create a better resort that includes more living room options, meeting rooms, additional meals, and more guest amenities. Renovated renovated guest rooms at Magnolia Wing, doubling the number of guest rooms, adding ten family suites, additional dining options, 7,500 square feet (700 m 2 ) from meeting facilities, gym and multi-level parking garage, 500 spaces.

The Eagles Lounge, which serves snacks and drinks, was closed in 2008.
