Management
Oneworld announced the creation of a central alliance team, Oneworld Management Company (oMC), in February 2000, to mark the first anniversary of the alliance. OMC was founded in May 2000 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and in June 2011 moved to New York City. It acts as the alliance center secretariat, with the responsibility to drive future growth and launch new customer services and benefits.
OMC was first led by Managing Partner Peter Buecking, formerly Director of Sales and Marketing at Cathay Pacific; followed by John McCulloch, formerly Vice President for Marketing. Bruce Ashby, who previously held the role of CEO of SAMA Airlines Saudi Arabia, CEO of IndiGo India, and Executive Vice President for US Airways, became CEO in December 2011. Rob Gurney replaced Ashby as CEO in October 2016.
Reporting to the CEO is Vice President for Commercial; Membership and Customer Experience; and Corporate Communications, a Chief Financial Officer and IT Director.
The CEO reports to the Oneworld Government Council, which consists of the chief executives of each of the member airlines. The Governing Council meets regularly to set strategic directions and review progress. The board's leadership is rotated among the chief executive members of the alliance. CEO Finnair Pekka Vauramo currently has a role.
Headquarters
In 2011, the alliance headquarters moved from Vancouver, Canada, to Park Avenue in New York City, sharing locations with local offices of Oneworld member airlines including American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines and Qantas.

Membership history
New global alliance
Oneworld was inaugurated by founding members, American Airlines, British Airways, Canadian Airlines (who left the alliance a few years later while joining Air Canada), Cathay Pacific, and Qantas at a press conference in London, England, on 21 September 1998. Oneworld was officially launched and commenced operations on February 1, 1999. The Alliance describes its services and benefits including:
- Transfer more smoothly for passengers traveling across all member airlines â ⬠<â â¬
- Greater support for passengers regardless of which member carrier they are visiting with
- Wider worldwide product range
- Increased cooperation in airline member frequent flyer programs to provide more prizes
- Wider identifier and access to more airport lounges.
Ahead of the official launch, the alliance embarked on an extensive employee communication and training program, involving nearly all of the 220,000 staff employed by five member airlines, to ensure they can deliver what the alliance brand promises. At its launch in 1999, Oneworld member airlines and affiliates served 648 destinations in 139 countries, and brought 181 million passengers with a fleet of 1,577 aircraft.
The first additional member
Finnair, the airline and flag of Finland's largest airline, was the first new alliance recruit on December 9, 1998. The alliance welcomed Iberia, the Spanish airline, as the second recruit on February 15, 1999. Both airlines, together with the Iberian franchisor, Iberia Regional Air Nostrum , joined the alliance on September 1, 1999, adding more than 50 destinations to the Oneworld network.
On May 19, 1999, LanChile (known as LAN and from 2016 as LATAM Chile) became the elected member, the first alliance representative of Latin America. Two subsidiaries LanChile, LAN Express and LAN Per̮'̼, will also join the alliance. Irish Airlines Aer Lingus was officially elected on board and confirmed as the ninth member of the alliance on December 2, 1999. When LanChile and Aer Lingus merged on June 1, 2000, Canadian Airlines abandoned the alliance, after Air Canada purchased a member of the Alliance Star rival.
Swiss International Air Lines (Switzerland) accepted an invitation to join Oneworld in September 2003, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on September 23, 2003 to enter into a broad commercial agreement with British Airways. However, Switzerland then decided not to proceed with a key element of its agreement with British Airways and was therefore exempt from its commitment to join Oneworld. Switzerland was later taken over by Lufthansa in 2005 and joined the Star Alliance in 2006.
2005-2006: The first major expansion drive
The mid-2000s saw Oneworld perform one of the greatest expansions in its history. The flag carrier of Hungary MalÃÆ' à © v signed the MOU in May 2005 as the predecessor of the official invitation to join, renewed in November 2005. On October 17, 2005, the alliance was signed as an elected member of Royal Jordanian, the first airline from the Middle East to accept an invitation to join the airline alliance global anywhere.
Japan Airlines (JAL), then the largest airline group in Asia, submitted an application to join the alliance on October 25, 2005. JAL and Oneworld exchanged the MOU on February 8, 2006, setting out a framework for remaining steps to take before the airline can officially invited to join. On June 5, 2006, JAL received an official invitation letter to join the alliance, along with five members of the JAL Group as affiliated members, including J-Air, JAL Express, JALways, Japan Asia Airways, and Japan Transocean Air.
The three groups of these airlines - Japan Airlines, MalÃÆ' à © v, and Royal Jordanian - joined as full members and began offering various services and alliance benefits on April 1, 2007, together with, as an Oneworld affiliate member, Japan Airlines' Air, JAL Express, JALways, Japan Asia Airways and Japan Transocean Air, and LAN LAN LAN and LAN Ecuador. They expanded the Oneworld network to nearly 700 airports in nearly 150 countries served by 9,000 daily departures, carrying about 315 million passengers per year with a fleet of nearly 2,500 aircraft, with top-level flyers accessing 400 airport halls around the world.
On the same day, Aer Lingus voluntarily quit the alliance because of a fundamental change to his business strategy. The Irish airline positions itself as a low point-to-point carrier, while Oneworld's focus is on multisector markets, premiums, and frequent international travelers. Though no longer a member of Oneworld, Aer Lingus maintains a frequent-flyer program partnership with several members of the alliance and continues to participate in global alliance global Explorer tariff products.
MalÃÆ' à © v suspended all unlimited services in February 2012, citing financial difficulties. His participation in Oneworld ended when the airline ended in the following weeks.
2009-2011: Recruitment and new expansion
On May 26, 2009, Russian airline S7Ã, Airlines was unanimously elected to alliance members. It became a full member on November 15, 2010, adding Oneworld one of the most extensive networks covering Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It expanded the Oneworld network to 54 other cities, 35 of which were in Russia. The airline subsidiary Globus Airlines joins Oneworld at the same time as an affiliate member.
On November 10, 2009, Oneworld welcomed Mexicana and its subsidiaries MexicanaClick and MexicanaLink after the airline received an official invitation to join the alliance on April 9, 2008. Mexicana and its affiliates added 26 destinations to the alliance map. Mexicana is a former Star Alliance member, leaving the group in March 2004 when terminating a codeshare agreement with United Airlines and choosing a bilateral agreement with Oneworld members of American Airlines and Iberia. On August 2, 2010, Mexicana filed for bankruptcy proceedings in Mexico and bankruptcy protection in the United States with its worsening financial situation. The airline suspended all operations from August 28, 2010. With the group under Mexican court protection, the airline remains a member of Oneworld who has been inactive since then.
On February 23, 2010, Kingfisher Airlines India took the first step to join Oneworld with its chairman Vijay Mallya and the chief executive of the existing member airlines who signed the memorandum of understanding, subject to Indian regulatory approval. The airline got approval to join the alliance of the Indian Civil Aviation Ministry and began participating in global alliance global Explorer tariff products. However, on February 3, 2012, just a week before joining the alliance, Kingfisher Airlines' entry was withheld to give more time to strengthen its financial position. Kingfisher Airlines ceased operations on October 20, 2012 and eventually ceased operations in February 2013.
On July 26, 2010, Air Berlin, Germany's second-largest airline, accepted an invitation to join Oneworld and join the alliance on March 20, 2012.
On June 6, 2011, Malaysia Airlines became the newly appointed member on the sidelines of the IATA World Air Summit in Singapore. Malaysia Airlines becomes part of Oneworld on February 1, 2013.
2012-present: Second big expansion
On June 11, 2012, SriLankan Airlines became the last member of Oneworld, on the sidelines of the IATA World Air Transport Summit in Beijing. Cathay Pacific serves SriLankan Airlines as its sponsor through an alliance implementation program. Implementation of membership is expected to take about 18 months. On May 1, 2014, SriLankan Airlines became a full member of the alliance making it the first airline in the Indian subcontinent to join any alliance.
On October 8, 2012, Qatar Airways became a member of Oneworld elected. Qatar Airways is one of the fastest growing airlines around the world - adding 15 destinations in 2012 alone - and one of the most respected, named Airline Companies of the Year by independent Skytrax quality rating agencies in both 2011 and 2012. The a deal to join was widely reported in the media as a coup for Oneworld, with Qatar Airways being the first among "Big Three" operators in the Persian Gulf to sign global airline alliances. The airline joins the alliance on October 30, 2013.
On February 14, 2013, American Airlines began planning to join US Airways. Upon approval of the US Federal Aviation Administration, the merger is completed on December 9, 2013. US Airways leaves Star Alliance on March 30, 2014, and joins Oneworld as an affiliate member the following day.
On March 7, 2013, LATAM Airlines Group chose Oneworld as its alliance, and its LAN LAN Colombia subsidiary plus TAM Airlines and its subsidiary TAM Paraguay will join Oneworld. LAN Colombia joined the alliance on October 1, 2013.
On March 31, 2014, TAM Airlines and US Airways merged with Oneworld after leaving Star Alliance on March 30, 2014.
On August 15, 2017, Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy after Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways halted the airline's funding. Air Berlin then left Oneworld after entering the administration and suspended operations on October 28, 2017.
Subsidiaries and franchises
In addition to full member airlines, Oneworld also includes about 30 "affiliate" members. These are generally regional airlines that are owned or have strong commercial links with complete members of the alliance. For customers, they expand the network that the alliance can offer. In government terms, these affiliates are represented in Oneworld affairs by their "parent" carrier.
Air LibertÃÆ'Ãà © stopped being a member of the Oneworld affiliate when the French airline was sold by British Airways to French investment group Taitbout, with British operators explaining that they were unable to receive an adequate return on investment in the business. Kenya-based Air Regional joined the alliance on July 1, 2001, following a franchise agreement with British Airways. British Airways terminated a franchise agreement with Regional Air when the African airline suspended flights in mid-April 2005, terminating its affiliate membership on Oneworld. The regional airline TWA, operated under the Trans World Express brand, became a member of the Oneworld affiliate, when their name was changed to AmericanConnection on December 2, 2001, following the acquisition of TWA by American Airlines. Three airlines operated under the AmericanConnection brand at the time: Chautauqua Airlines, Corporate Airlines, and Trans States Airlines.
The alliance further strengthens its network in Latin America when two LAN subsidiaries, LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador, become the newest affiliate member of the alliance. LAN Argentina launched its passenger and cargo services in June 2005 from its base in Buenos Aires, while the Ecuador LAN launched its service in April 2003 from its base in Guayaquil. The two airlines officially joined their twin airlines and offered services and alliance benefits on April 1, 2007.
By contrast, on March 5, 2007, the alliance terminated its relationship with affiliated member and subsidiary British Airways, BA Connect. Regional operations BAÃ, Connect in the UK were sold to Flybe on November 3, 2006, in return for a 15% stake in the last section. About 50 UK regional routes are affected by sales; however, Belfast and Southampton will remain connected to the alliance network through British Airways and other alliance members. BA Connect operations from London City Airport and between Manchester and New York are maintained and operated by another British Airways subsidiary, BA CityFlyer, and the airline itself.
The alliance ended its relationship with British Airways BMED member affiliates and franchisees on October 27, 2007, following the purchase of the airline by one of Britain's British Airways rivals BMI. Four days later, Oneworld welcomed the latest affiliate member and Cathay Pacific wholly owned subsidiary Dragonair for the alliance on November 1, 2007. Dragonair has the largest network to mainland China for non-mainland-based airlines, with around 400 departures a week.
In 2008, the alliance lost two other affiliated members as British Airways continued its strategy of reducing its British franchise. The first Franchisee, GBÃ, Airways, quit the alliance on March 30, 2008, after its purchase by EasyJet. British Airways intends to start services from London Heathrow to Faro, Portugal, and MÃÆ'llaga, Spain, and from London Gatwick to Faro, Gibraltar, Ibiza, MÃÆ'álaga, Palma, and Tunis, operated under the franchise. The Alliance bid farewell to one of its affiliated members, Japan Asia Airways on March 31, 2008, after consolidating the airline to its parent, Japan Airlines. The second British Airways franchise Loganair abandoned the alliance on October 25, 2008, following the end of the franchise agreement with the airline. Separate agreements for codesharing on some Loganair services replace previous franchises, for British Airways passengers connected via Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
10th anniversary
In February 2009, Oneworld celebrated its tenth anniversary with ten airlines - American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia Airlines, Japan Airlines, LAN, MalÃÆ' à © v, Qantas, and Royal Jordanian. In the last decade, membership has doubled from the initial five members to ten members now; Its member carriers carry a total of 2.5 billion passengers and generate nearly $ 500 billion, EUR450 million of revenue from passenger activities. The tariff and product sales alliance earned $ 5 billion, EUR2.5 billion in revenue alone, with two-thirds or nearly $ 3 billion, EUR1.5 billion will not be generated if the alliance does not exist. As part of the celebration and to raise awareness of the 10-member alliance, all airline alliance members decorate some of their fleet with the new standard of Oneworld - about 40 aircraft in total, mainly the type that flies on international routes. The alliance also launched a special version of its logo, displaying the text "10 years" printed on the back of the word Oneworld as a watermark on the round blue ball.

Status premium
Oneworld has three levels of premium status - Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald - based on customer-level status in the airline's frequent flyer program. Emerald status is the highest level in every member program, and all of its status is recognized by each member airline. Premium status does not have their own specific requirements; membership is based solely on frequent flyer programs of individual member airlines. The benefit alliance is only available to passengers on scheduled flights operated and marketed by member airlines.
Alliance tariff
Alliance tariffs include:
- oneworld Explorer: Prices are based on travel class (Economy, Premium Economy if available, Business, or First) and, uniquely, the number of continents visited, rather than the mileage of the entire trip, to keep the planning trip as simple and as flexible as possible. Flights may be on one of the Oneworld operators. oneworld Explorer is the world's first multi-airline round-trip ticket online that can be ordered online.
- Global Explorer: Worldwide round-the-clock, but based on distance traveled. These include several non-Oneworld airlines, such as Aer Lingus, Air Pacific, Alaska Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Meridianafly, WestJet, and several flights operated by Air Tahiti Nui, Jetstar, South African Airlines and Vietnam Airlines, extending more covered destinations far.
- Explorer Circle: Similar to Explorer oneworld, but does not require a trip to North or South America, so you can fly in the world and then back again, without actually circling the planet (eg London-Hong Kong-Sydney -Johannesburg -London).
- Pacific Circle: Other Explorer variants. These are for travel around the Pacific Ocean, including Australia/NZ, Asia, and North and South America (eg, Los Angeles-Tokyo-Sydney-Los Angeles).
- The South and South West Pacific Circle: Covering Northeast and Southeast Asia, and the Southwest Pacific.
- Atlantic Circle: Covers Europe, Middle East, and North and South America.
- Visit Visits: Offers multi-sector flights to all Oneworld operators in certain continents as well as in Japan and Malaysia.

All alliance aircraft bear a small Oneworld logo, 30 cm in diameter (12 inches), to the right of the first set of entrances behind the cockpit.
Japan Airlines - 2007 Oneworld special livery
In 2007, Japan Airlines (JAL) painted two Boeing 777s, Boeing 777-200ER (JA704J) and Boeing 777-300 (JA8941), in a special Oneworld livery to mark its entrance into the alliance. The first aircraft (JA704J) took off from the main international center of Tokyo Narita International Airport as Japan Airlines 441 flight to Moscow on April 16, 2007. The design featured "a large globe on the distinctive blue Oneworld blue, painted in the center of the plane, with stylish motifs to symbolize the comfort, convenience, value and choice available to passengers across a comprehensive global network of alliances ".
Standard livery Oneworld
The new Oneworld livery (optional) standard is introduced as part of the alliance's tenth anniversary celebration in February 2009. It features an alliance name in a capital letters that is almost 2 meters (6.6Ã, ft) tall and an alliance logo along the side of their fuselage, with a backdrop back of white or polished metal.
