Motel 6 is a privately owned American hospitality company with a low-cost chain of motels in the United States and Canada. Motel 6 also operates Studio 6 , a range of extended stay hotels. The hotel brand is owned by The Blackstone Group, which established G6 Hospitality as a management company for Motel 6 and Studio 6.

History

Motel 6 was founded in Santa Barbara, California, in 1962, by two local building contractors, William Becker and Paul Greene. The partners developed plans to build motels with cheap rooms. They decided on a room rate of $ 6.00 per night (equivalent to $ 49 in 2017) that would cover the cost of the building, the rent of the land, and the cleaning supplies; then the company name is "Motel 6".

Becker and Greene specialize in building low-cost housing developments, and they want to provide alternatives to other major hotel chains, such as the Holiday Inn, whose location is increasing in quality and price in the 1960s, having embarked on a budget-oriented concept. The occupancy rate at that time was about 85 percent, well above the industry average, and as a result of their success , Motel 6 became an attractive acquisition target. Becker and Greene sold the chain to the investment group in 1968.

In the early 1970s, Motel 6 opened its largest location, Motel 6 Tropicana, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, the chain moved east and opened its location in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1972. In 1980 Motel 6 had reached 300 locations. It was sold to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts in 1985, which moved the chain away from the "no-frills" approach and began including facilities such as telephone and color television.

Market share declined throughout the 1980s, partly due to increased competition from other budget hotels. In 2006, Accor and Motel 6 invested over $ 6 million in properties to help rebuild New Orleans and Gulfport after Hurricane Katrina. One of the co-founders of Motel 6, William Becker, died of a heart attack at the age of 85 next year.

In October 2012, Accor Hotels ended the sale of the Motel 6 chain to The Blackstone Group for $ 1.9 billion.

In September 2017, an immigration lawyer accused the Motel 6 desk clerk at two locations in Phoenix, Arizona to notify US Immigration and Customs when guests checked in with identification from Mexico. Lawyers say that court records show that federal immigration agents capture at least 20 people at Motel 6 locations for seven months by 2017. Motel 6 says that the practice is "conducted locally without senior management knowledge" and each location has been instructed that they " is prohibited from voluntarily providing daily list of guests to ICE. Services

Motel 6 says the goal is to offer "clean and comfortable rooms at the lowest prices of national chains." This is important for what services it does and does not cost customers.

Motel 6 advertises room rates as single occupancy and charges a fee for each additional adult in the room. Most other hotel chains in the United States include double occupancy in room rates. There is no fee for children under the age of 17 when staying in the same room as an adult family member.

Almost all of the locations are pet friendly and unlike most national hotel chains, Motel 6 does not charge a pet fee (Studio 6 location charged $ 10 per day).

Rooms generally do not include an alarm clock, coffee maker, or facial tissue. The customer only provided bar soap in the bathroom and no shampoo, conditioner, or body lotion. The hotel lobby offers free morning coffee, but breakfast is not provided.

Many of the Motel 6 locations charge customers for wireless internet access, usually $ 3 per night for basic access and $ 5 per night for premium high bandwidth services suitable for streaming. Nearly all other hotel chains in the US provide at least basic internet access for free, although some charge, or require membership in the reward program for access to premium services.

Studio 6 (long stay)

Since 1999, Motel 6 also operates Studio 6, an extended hotel chain that offers more amenities than the standard Motel 6 locations, while also offering weekly and monthly rates. Studio 6 provides an expanded kitchen area, including a full-sized refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, microwave oven, electric stove and a set of dishes/utensils, in all rooms. Studio 6 allows pets with certain restrictions. Hotel Studio 6 is located in 15 US and Canadian states. Competitors include Extended Stay Hotels and Choice Hotels' Suburban Extended Stay Hotels. Some Studio 6 locations have been converted from other brands, such as Homestead Studio Suites.

Room renovation

In March 2008, Motel 6 began an entire system renovation program called "Phoenix Project" to update the look and facilities of all bedrooms.

Before remodeling most rooms have bed covers inspired by colorful streets, carpeted floors, shower curtains, outdated CRT televisions and cream-colored furniture. The stained carpet and dirty shower curtain are a common complaint on online customer reviews.

The remodel is designed with an eye toward not only modernizing the rooms, but keeping the room rate low for years to come. The designer accomplishes this by making the room more energy efficient, easy to clean, and easier to keep clean in the long run (keeping household expenses and maintenance low).

The rooms now feature modern furnishings influenced by European hotels and boutiques, including platform beds with pillow-top mattresses, bright orange, turquoise or lime green on wall and blanket accents, flat-screen televisions, wooden flooring-effects made from recycled materials, shower doors, and granite countertops for bathroom sinks.

The rooms that are updated rents are no more than the chamber's older room charges.

Motel 6 plans to have all of its renovated rooms at the end of 2017.

Ad campaigns

Starting in 1986, Motel 6 has advertised through a radio ad featuring the voice of national radio writer and commentator Tom Bodett, with the tagline "We'll let the lights on for you". These ads were created by Dallas advertising agency, The Richards Group. They performed a song composed by Tom Faulkner, performed by him on guitar and Milo Deering on the violin. The first points were conceived and written by David Fowler. In 1996, the ad won the Clio Award. The campaign itself has won many national and international awards, and was selected by the Ad Age magazine as one of the Top 100 Twenty-first Advertising Campaigns.

For the 50th anniversary in 2012, Motel 6 began using the motto, "50 Years, Light Still On."
