A gurn or chuck , in English English, is a distorted facial expression and a verb to describe the action. The American English equation is making faces . A typical gurnus may involve projecting the lower jaw as far forward and upward as possible, and covering the upper lip with the lower lip, though there may be other possibilities.
The English Dialect Dictionary, compiled by Joseph Wright, defines the word gurn as "grumbling as a dog, to look ruthless, distorting faces," while Oxford English Dictionary shows derivation originally from Scotland associated with "grin." "In Northern Ireland, the verb" to gurn "means" to weep, "and crying is often referred to as" gurnin. "Initially the use of Scottish dialectics refers to someone who complains.
