Eid il-Burbara or St. Barbara's Day (Arabic: ??? ???????? ?), is a holiday annually celebrated on December 4 (Gregorian calendar), December 17 (Julian calendar), among Middle East Christians in Lebanon, Israel, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Turkey (Hatay Province). It has been a Lebanese partner for Halloween celebrations, though it already exists as a tradition much earlier. It was celebrated in honor of the Christian Saints and Martyrs of Saint Barbara. The common belief among Lebanese Christians is that Saint Barbara disguised as many different characters to avoid the Roman persecutors.

Tradition

Traditional dishes made at this feast are Burbara , a bowl of boiled wheat seeds, pomegranate seeds, raisins, aniseed and sugar. It is offered to children who go from one house to another in costume. In the Middle East, Middle Eastern Christians cook dough filled with walnuts or cheese. Traffic is heavy in the bakery because people buy traditional food for this holiday. Children go deceit or cure while singing a special song for Eid-Burbara. Moreover, Halloween decorations, such as jack-o'-lanterns, can be seen.

A common practice in Lebanon at Eid-Burbara found its source on the legend of Saint Barbara who is believed to witness a miracle while escaping the prosecution. He ran through a newly planted wheat field, which grew quickly to cover his path.

This miracle was re-created symbolically today by planting wheat kernels (or peas, seeds, nuts, lentils, etc.) in cotton on the feast of Santa Barbara. The seeds germinate and grow about 6 inches in time for Christmas, when buds are used to decorate the birth scene of Jesus that is usually placed under a Christmas tree.
