Australia
An Australian-style costume usually follows the style of the United States, and Halloween costume parties have been common since the early 1990s, although Halloween has never been a historic event in Australia. The typical events for Australians involving dressing up are Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Christmas parties and staff cricket matches.
One of the oldest examples of costumes worn in Australia is on display at the Museum of Western Australia. It was a fancy costume costume worn by Miss Rita Lloyd, who was nine years old, into the 'Young Juvenile Fancy Dress Ball' at the Mansion House in Perth on January 8, 1909.

United Kingdom
nineteenth century
The origins of a costume party in England can be in some way traced to a masked ball from the period of the 18th century. In the period of 1850, the costume ball was a typical part of the social life of music festivals.
The common costumes of the time were certain historical characters, general historical or regional outfits, abstract concepts (such as "winter", "starlight" or "night"), and objects (such as "champagne bottles" or "aquariums" ). Popular characters include, for women, Marie Antoinette and Elizabeth I, and for men, Napoleon and Robin Hood.
20th Century
Notable among early events in the 20th century was the Chelsea Arts Club. Such events are often complex affairs and are largely confined to those who have many means.
Among the general population, the costume party also occurred with increasing frequency from the late 1940s onwards, although for the most part the costume was a simple affair until the mid-1970s. Prior to the import of 'cheap' costumes from the Far East/East Asia (late 1990s), most of the costumes were employed or built at home. Retail costume, with respect to the UK, is a very modern phenomenon (late 1990s and beyond) even though 'accessory' items have been available for some time. Due to increased import tariffs in the late 1990s onwards, many materials/products were imported from the Far East (with cost savings in labor and bulk orders). It has seen the cost of purchased costumes become more and more affordable.
Coupled with modern trends in costume parties, the 'retro' fashion as a costume theme (such as the 1970s or 1980s costumes) is also popular, the costumes have to some extent parodied or mimicked the fashion style of previous decades. Among the most popular parodied costumes are: Audrey Hepburn (like Holly Golightly), Madonna in her classic stage outfit, and recently Lady Gaga.
A popular costume party throughout the year in England. The 1996 Bridget Jones novel shows the theme of the classic British "Tarts and Vicars" costume party in which women wear provocative costumes ("tarts"), while men dress like Anglican priests ("priests"). A party of fancy costumes has been held by the Royal Family of England. Prince William, the heir to the throne of England, celebrates his 21st birthday with the theme "Out of Africa", Princess Beatrice of York opted for the 1888 themed party for his 18th birthday, and Lord Frederick ("Freddie") Windsor and brother his Lady Lady Gabriella Windsor, the little nobleman celebrating a birthday party along with the pre-French Revolutionary courtesy.
United States
19th century
At the end of the nineteenth century in New York, the costume party was popular among the rich. Costume is usually a historical European aristocracy. Authenticity is important, even extending to use elements of the actual period. For example, Cornelia Bradley-Martin attends her own party, the famous Bradley-Martin Ball, dressed up like Marie Antoinette, wearing the jewelry that Antoinette actually owns and uses. The choice of aristocratic costumes enables rich Americans, with relatively limited family history, to assume some elements of history and legitimacy.
twentieth century
Party costumes are very popular in the United States around Halloween, when teenagers and adults may be considered too old for a trick-or-treat attending a costume party instead. Party costumes are also popular during the carnival season, such as at Mardi Gras.
Attendees occasionally wear costumes for popular science fiction and fantasy shows, movie openings and book launches. Theonering.net website hosts an Oscar gown party attended by Peter Jackson. Star Wars was held to celebrate the opening of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace . Many bookstores have a Harry Potter themed party to celebrate the release of the next series of novels, and some theaters have Potter-themed celebrations when movie adaptations have been released.
Large-scale 'parties' are often associated with organized societies or conventions.
