Plot

The office became excited about the annual Halloween costume contest, a gift which is a Scranton-area coupon book. Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nunez), frustrated that nobody else realized how little the gift of a coupon book, changed from his costume and swiftly stated that he was dressed like a "rational consumer". The significance of this movement goes beyond the heads of other workers, and Oscar is becoming more and more ashamed of being almost the only one who is not wearing a costume. Pam Halpert (Jenna Fischer) constantly begs Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) to wear matching pair costume from Popeye and Olive Oyl with him, but he refuses because he feels he is too old for the costume. As the days passed, some people realized that their costumes might not win, so they left the office to move on to something more recognizable or provocative.

Gabe Lewis (Zach Woods) tells staff that delivery shippers can now suggest additional products for their customers, thereby increasing sales for the company. Michael Scott (Steve Carell) realizes this idea is similar to the suggestion made by Darryl Philbin (Craig Robinson), which he has dropped. He now realizes this is a mistake and apologizes to Darryl, and Darryl says he has no grudge against him. However, Michael felt increasingly uncomfortable at Darryl not receiving credit for his idea, and announced to the entire office that he would confront the company about stealing Darryl's idea. Gabe tells Michael that Darryl really gave the idea to him, and has received praise.

New seller Danny Cordray (Timothy Olyphant) invites everyone to a Halloween party at his bar after work. Almost everyone in the office was aware that Danny and Pam were dating two years ago. Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner) and Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) told Danny that they were not going to the party because Pam did not want it, which prompted Danny to face Jim and Pam. They assured her that Pam did not care if people went to her party, and the three laughed about how their colleagues exaggerated the meaning of two dates with Pam; However, it also became clear that Pam wanted to know exactly why she was rejected. Danny says he never called back because Pam talked about Jim during their date. Pam reveals she never mentioned Jim, and Danny admits that she thinks it's too "tacky." Jim realizes he loves Pam because it's so tacky, and comes into the office wearing Popeye's costume and carrying CeCe (dressed up like Swee'Pea), so much fun Pam.

Michael is angry that Darryl goes to his head, and tries to get Darryl to apologize in front of everyone to 'stab' him. Darryl refused, criticizing Michael's bad judgment of his ideas. Michael changed his costume into a Darryl warehouse uniform, and made fun of it. Both brought their arguments to Gabe, where Darryl expressed his opinion that Michael never did anything for him. After some negotiations by Gabe, Darryl and Michael apologize to each other. Darryl hopes he still operates in the warehouse, but Andy inspires Darryl to advance his career at Dunder Mifflin.

Oscar was declared the winner of the costume contest. A series of interviews revealed some of the reasons employees chose Oscars - Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling) chose who he thought was the least likely to win, Ryan Howard (BJ Novak) for unseeded teams, and Creed Bratton (Creed Bratton) because he thought Oscar was wearing Edward James Olmos's very nice costume.

Production

The "Costume Contest" was directed by Dean Holland, an editor in the series, and was written by Justin Spitzer. Holland also directed the fifth episode of the season, "The Duel". It was the second episode to feature Timothy Olyphant, who was billed as a special guest star, in a guest appearance as Danny Cordray. David Koechner appeared as Todd Packer, last seen in the sixth episode of the season, "St. Patrick's Day". With the seventh season The Office being the last Carell, the authors decided to divide the season into two different sections; the first half will "celebrate Carell's last year and highlight the different actors on the show", while the second half will focus on his departure and find a new manager. Thus, the "Costume Contest" was one of the first episodes of the season to specifically highlight other characters, in this case Robinson's character, Darryl.

Within weeks of the original air date, Hulu released four scenes that were removed from the episode. In the first 87 second clip, Dwight and Michael try to destroy Darryl's idea by doing a fake battle that ultimately fails. In the second 79 second clip, Dwight kisses up Darryl if he's promoted. In the fifty-second clip, Toby and Kelly explain why they want a coupon book while the Oscars look for something good in the book.
