Ballston Spa High School is a public high school located in Ballston Spa, New York. It is part of the Ballston Spa Central School District, which covers the cities of Ballston, Milton, and Malta in Saratoga County. The mascot is a Scottie dog, dedicated to the old athlete/coach, Coach William R. Scott. The colors of Purple and Gold schools but complementary colors (alternative) black are often used.
The secondary school was moved to a new building in 1998; it remains on the same campus as the previous high school, which now serves as a secondary school. Before moving on to the current complex in the 1950s, Ballston Spa High School is located in what is now Malta Avenue Elementary School. Graduation grade sizes range from 300 to 400, resulting in a total student population of about 1,400.

Course
Ballston Spa offers courses in various fields. Students may take advanced courses in math, science or technology, or more focus on the arts.
Advisory period
Each academic department has an "advisory room" and every hour advisors the teacher. Similar to the office hours of professors in college, these are provided so that students can seek help during their study.
Advanced course
Starting in high school, students have the opportunity to accelerate in some areas of learning. The program continues into secondary schools, where classes have multiple levels to meet the academic needs of each student. Many classes are also offered as an Advanced Placement course to students who want to challenge themselves and earn college credits. In addition to AP courses, Ballston Spa offers special lecture classes, where students are presented with college level material and can earn credits from local colleges. Although registration to a college is not required to take a class, it is necessary to obtain a college credit for the class. Students are charged a reduced fee to enroll in a college course. Ballston Spa is also very open-minded in terms of independent studies, including online courses.
IB course
Ballston Spa offers students the International Baccalaureate curriculum in the fall of 2012.
Requirements
Updated course requirements and more information are provided in the Middle School website guide section, available at www.bscsd.org.

Schedule
Ballston Spa operates with a rotating block schedule, in which eight blocks of scheduling (classes) are distributed over four six-day periods. Classes are divided between the morning and evening classes, which rotate separately through the first three and the last three periods, with the fourth period having an additional half an hour built for lunch. Students are placed in one of three lunches, depending on which class is scheduled during the period. Although students report problems with scheduling recitations, the schedule offers many benefits: more varied days than in simple Day A/B schedules, and not binding directly to weekdays allow for more flexibility.
Athletics
Ballston Spa's athletic program is a member of the Suburban Council. Ballston Spa offers many sports at the Modified, Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels for boys and girls. The current Varsity sports are:
The Athletics section of the website contains a lot of information about the athletics program in the district, and is accessed through www.bscsd.org.
Arts
Ballston Spa's art program is and has a large number of motivated participants. In school students can choose from a variety of art, music/history theory, and performance-oriented classes, utilizing Ballston Spa's art facilities, including dark rooms, multiple kilns, and a complete auditorium/theater.
Conduct a group
A number of musical groups are offered through the music department, including the Symphonic Band along with the Wind Ensemble audition, and AJazz Band directed by Mrs. DeRagon. The Symphonic and Concert Orchestra is directed by Ny. Reeves. Also, Concert and Choir of Women together with Choir Choose audition only.
These groups perform at least twice a year, with concerts in December and May, occasionally performing at a special concert in March. Members of the group also use their musical talents in the community on a regular basis, organized mainly by the Ballston Spa chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. The band members, for example, have been featured on street corners and Maplewood Manor, a local nursing home, around Christmas, while the choir members have gone darting at Ballston Spa center and at a local lullaby.
Some also consider Intro to Theater and Intro to Act class as show groups, because students in these classes wear "Night of the Scenes" for their midterms and final exams. For Scene Night, students prepare scenes that they write themselves or found in the dramas they read, and then show them live for an audience in January and again in June.
Troupe
Extracurricular theater club Ballston Spa is known as Troupe, and current director Matthew Lopez places two performances a year, an autumn show usually being a smaller show or drama and spring performances into a great musical.
2007 marks the resignation of the old director Pat Pacelli, with whom Larson will be activated and turned off. Before Larson joined the district in 2000, Pacelli became the sole director since the early 90s. He has acted as the first choreographer and then the producer for Don Mitola, the previous director, took over the lead position when he retired. Pacelli himself had attended Ballston Spa, and had been involved in the theater as a student.
Troupe was originally a separate group of theater clubs sponsored by the school. Originally, in 1977, it was as a group of small travel shows with the goal of an interesting elementary school student in the theater. The group was raised from a very successful school theater program, such as Theater Theater Spa. All these groups are under the direction of Don Mitola and Harry Smith. In the 1980s school programs adopted the name and logo of Troupe as their own.

Noteworthy are some academic-related teams. Ballston Spa's Olympic Science Team, advised by physics teachers, placed fourth in the area for the 2006 season, and often went to state competitions. From a newer note, the team placed 3 in the regional and 23 new school records in the state for the 2008 season. The team also ranked 3rd in the 2010 season. The Mock Trial team, advised by history teachers, also has a good record, putting it nicely in the 2006-2007 season. A Biology teacher runs the Envirothon team, which was placed very well in the state in the 2007 season. Ballston Spa also has a team of Odyssey of the Mind.
National Honor Society
The Ballston Spa Chapter of the National Honor Society contains over fifty members from the Junior and Senior classes and is very active in the Ballston Spa community.
Student life
Throughout the year, student groups sponsor fundraising and activities, such as BBQ Chicken Homecoming, Pizza and Wings Night (the area where pizza is invited to send samples, and students choose their favorites), Amnesty International-sponsored Café, Talent Show, Foreign Lip-Sync, "Ballstonian" contest, and Ballstonian Idol (American Idol parody). These events have been known to gather a lot of audience and are popular among the students. Dance is held annually at Ballston Spa. The first two, Homecoming and Fire and Ice (held on the weekend and mid-February, respectively), are sponsored by the Congress of Student Legislators, while Senior Proms are held in mid-May, usually at SPAC's Hall of Springs.
