How to Activate

Airplane mode , airoplane mode , flight mode , offline mode , or standalone mode are the settings available on many smartphones, portable computers, and other electronic devices that, when enabled, will delay transmission of radio frequency signals by the device, disabling Bluetooth, phone and Wi-Fi. GPS may or may not be disabled, as it does not involve transmitting radio waves.

This name is derived from restrictions by most airlines using radio frequency signal transmission equipment while in flight; using airplane mode prevents the device from transmitting.

When "airplane mode" is enabled, it disables all voice, text, phone and other signal transmitting technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can be activated separately even when the device is in airplane mode; this is acceptable on some planes. Receiving radio frequency signals, such as by radio receivers and satellite navigation services, is not inhibited. However, even receiving phone calls and messages without responding will require a phone to send; smartphone in airplane mode is an effective PDA.

In a revised review in October 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States made recommendations on the use of electronic devices in "airplane mode" - the mobile phone is disabled, while Wi-Fi can be used if the operator offers it. Short-term transmissions like Bluetooth are always allowed. The statement cites the general practice of aircraft operators whose aircraft can tolerate the use of these electronic devices, but their use may still be prohibited on some models of aircraft.

While in airplane mode, most devices allow users to continue using email clients or other programs to write text or E-mail messages stored in memory to send when airplane mode is disabled.

While it is not possible to make regular calls or send text in airplane mode, devices like some Nokia smartphones allow users to make calls to emergency services even in airplane mode, while others do not.

As a side effect, airplane mode reduces power consumption and increases battery life by turning off the transmitter and receiver of the device.

Legal status in different countries

  • China: Before September 2017, all phones, even with Airplane mode, are never allowed to be used during the flight even if other devices can be used while at roaming altitudes. On September 18, 2017, China's Civil Aviation Authority relaxed this rule and allowed all Chinese airlines to allow the use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) for all flights while they are in Airplane Mode.
  • Europe: On December 9, 2013, the European Aviation Safety Agency updated its guides on portable electronic devices (PEDs), allowing them to be deployed across all flights as long as they are set in Airplane mode.
  • India: On April 23, 2014, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) changed the rules prohibiting the use of portable electronic devices and enabling their use in all flight phases.
